Jangan Pandang Belakang ...
I think I've posted before about how big a coward I am when it comes to all thing supernatural right? And that how wifey is the brave one in the family, right? She's like the superwoman in the family. Well, a couple of days ago, I found out that wifey is only human and was actually as scared as I was while watching this horror movie. I think it was Friday last week, wifey, the boys and me were in the hall watching TV like we always do after dinner.
We've got a couple of shows that we like to watch on Fridays and one of them is something called Restaurant Makeover. That particular show starts a little later in the night, around 10.00pm and the boys look forward to watching it as well cos it's a Friday night and they can stay up later than normal cos on school nights, I send them to bed at 9.30pm.
While waiting for that show to start, wifey would normally channel surf and she happened to chance upon a local horror movie called 'Jangan Pandang Belakang' (Don't Look Back) that was going to clash with the Restaurant Makeover show. Now, while we both don't really watch local movies all that much, this was one that we wanted to see so we opted to watch the movie instead seeing as how there would be a repeat of the Restaurant Makeover show a couple of days later.
The kids weren't too pleased with that decision with the younger fellow (the more vocal one) making a big fuss about it and complaining that he didn't want to see a horror movie cos he would be too afraid to sleep later. But us being adults, well we vetoed his complaints (LOL) and watched the movie instead. Ok, before we go any further, remember I said I'm a big coward when it comes to anything supernatural? Well, that includes horror movies too.
While I love watching horror movies, I'd always have a pillow or throw cushion with me to hide behind (don't you dare laugh!) when the scene gets too spooky. I'd normally cower in fright behind the pillows and peep through the whole movie (I can see you laughing over there!). Wifey on the other hand would normally sit through the whole movie like a if nothing happened. Told you she was a superwoman. LOL!
But this time it was a little different. When the movie finally started, it started off with an exorcism scene in a small village with the local bomoh (a traditional healer) trying to cast away an evil entity from this old man who eventually died. Suddenly there was this one scene just before the intro credits started rolling when this pontianak (local version of a vampire) started crawling down from the top of the house roof. Now this would all be normal for a horror movie but then I hear wifey scream!
Of course, being your regular full time coward, I look at her and scream right along with her. The boys who are already cowering on the floor in front of us with cushions all around them, looks at us screaming and starts to scream along too. Now, the whole family is screaming (I'll bet you guys can just pictures us) and covering our faces with pillows.
After the initial excitement dies down, I ask wifey what the heck she screamed for and she said that figure of the pontianak crawling down took her by surprise cos she didn't notice it and it frighten the hell out of her. Darn! She got me and the boys all worked up for no reason ... hehehe ... I don't know why but she was really freaked out by that scene that throughout the movie (well, not the whole movie anyway) she joined me and the boys by watching the movie from behind our pillows ... LOL!
Actually I don't think the movie was that scary and I wasn't really scared at all, but after wifeys scream, well my imagination ran wild and my younger boy was also acting up and making a big fuss that he was scared, so eventually we opted to switch channels and watch Restaurant Makeover instead. If we did continue watching the movie, I was inclined to join the boys in their little pillow fort that they built.
I've always been terrified of watching horror movies, especially the local ones of yesteryear. They really are so darn creepy that when I was young and my whole family gathered in the living room to watch these movies every Friday night, I'd make a nice little fort of pillows to hide behind and just peek out from behind it and watch the movie. The worse thing is I'd have nightmares after that for days ... hehehe ... in fact I still do.
I remember once, a few years ago, I was all alone at home. It was a Saturday afternoon and I was watching this local horror show called Pontianak Harum Sundal Malam (please don't ask me to translate that to English ... hehehe) and after the show I could hardly take a nap cos I was so scared and it was in the middle of the afternoon mind you!
The thing is I love horror movies and I'd force myself to sit through them and watch them, with or without the pillows, though if there wasn't a pillow handy, I'd peek at it with one eye closed, like as if that would make the show less scarier ... LOL! Some of my favourites are The Exorcist, The Omen (the original one and not the remake), Poltergeist and who can forget Dracula ... hehehe ... The first time I watched The Exorcist when I was a small boy, I almost wet my pants! LOL!
Well, at least I now know that wifey does get scared too at times ... hehehe ... that sure makes me feel good cos most of the time something spooky happens, I'll always let her deal with it :D But honey, you're not allowed to get scared too much, ok? Cos if you do, just who the heck is going to handle the spooky stuff? Definitely not me and the boys. We're not cut out for work like that ... hahaha! Maybe we could get some phone cards that could connect us directly to the Ghost Busters or something ... LOL!
