The Manbag!

You're probably going to see me posting a little less than I normally do for the next two weeks and you can blame it all on the Olympics. I'm a huge sports fan and have been glued (when I'm not napping, that is) to the TV savoring as much of the live events that I can feast my eyes upon.

In fact I just finished watching the US of A play China in the basketball event. I'm not a huge basketball fan, in fact I don't know much basketball terms but watching the way the US walked all over the Chinese had me glued to the TV until the final whistle.

And one thing is for sure, I'm going to be catching the next series of the game between the US and Angola. I'm sure that's probably going to another walk in the park for the rich and famously stylish players of the USA. I wanted to actually do a post earlier but the basketball game kinda delayed that a little.

The next series of events I'm really looking forward to are the athletics, especially anything to do with running. You all know how much I love running. Unfortunately, I think all the athletics events would probably be featured in the morning while I'm at work so I'll just have to resign myself to watching the repeats at night. Well, unless of course I can somehow manage to bum off work for a bit ... LOL!

Anyways, I've been meaning to post about this a couple of days ago but never got around to it. A few days back, Thursday I think, wifey and me had lunch at one of our regular lunch places. And on the table next to me, I saw this guy who had a ... urrmmm ... what would you call it, 'manbag' (?), a male's equivalent of a handbag. And he seemed so at ease with carrying his 'manbag' with him.

I shuddered just looking at him. And then the next day I saw another guy with this 'manbag' and I was shaking my head in disbelief. Maybe I'm being a little bit judgmental but I was born in the era where men didn't carry handbags. And it amused me to see a man with his 'manbag' tucked under his arm, decked in his tight shirt and bell bottomy pants, smelling of strong sweet perfume walking around like it was a normal thing to do. Maybe it was normal for him, but it sure wasn't for me ... LOL!

Like I said, I'm of the older generation where a man wouldn't be caught dead carrying a plastic bag let alone a handbag! It ruins the macho image, you know ... LOL! Some of you might call that as being a male chauvinistic pig! But I cannot see why a man would even need a handbag?

I mean, if you're a woman, I can understand. You've got your lipsticks, compact powders, eyeliners, mascaras, a change of clothes and maybe about 2-3 pairs of shoes (LOL!) to keep in that handbag of yours but what could a man possible have that he needs a 'manbag' for himself?

Don't tell me he has got lipstick and all that in there too? If you really need something to keep your stuff in, get a pouch for goodness sakes (or a fanny pack as the Americans call it). I guess the times had changed quite a bit since my days.

Maybe it's okay for men to carry handbags these days, maybe it's even okay if they start using lipsticks, eye liners (and I've seen some who actually do use them), even wearing skirts and blouses but I'm just a plain old fashioned kind of guy who will never in a million years carry any sort of handbag, even if my life depended on it. And as much a I love my beloved wife, I don't even carry her handbag!

I guess it's the sign of the times where men are more fashion conscious and are more in-tuned with their feminine side these days. What was that term they had for them? Metro-sexuals? Don't know if that is the right term but you know the type, the newer generation of men who wouldn't mind going out to the hairdressers, getting facials done, going shopping, dressing in fancy clothing, etc, etc, etc.

As for me, I'd rather be smelling of musky sweat with a five o'clock shadow on my face, decked out in my old faded jeans with my pocket watch tucked in it, a nice worn out and well used t-shirt and my dusty pair of sneakers and most definitely no 'manbags'! Now that's what being a man is all about! LOL!

  1. My father is nuts about the Olympics too. I've never really watched them until this year with my dad. Totally amazing.

  2. currently, Malaysia's at the first place (from the back) in the Olympics and they've not won any medals yet. LOL. I thought M'sia has spent billions on our athletes?

  3. Meleah - Well, glad you finally decided to catch it. Amazing doesn't even begin to describe it sometimes ... oh and by the way, I'm rooting for the US of A seeing as how the athletes from my own country have no hope whatsoever!

  4. Monica - That's exactly where I expected our Malaysian contingent to be! LOL!

Yeah, a lot of good money has been pumped into getting them ready but then you know la how everything in Malaysia works.

We'd be better of rooting for some other country ...

  5. I think only the metrosexuals go for man bags. Takes a bit of getting used to for me too, to see men carrying such stuff.

  9. Now US pandai la wanna put their best players forward. They were being to cocky last time to think that they couldn't be beaten so now they're not taking their chances anymore. Too bad I missed the game though. :(

Hey, manbags are cool la! Metrosexuals wear them all the time but just make sure the manbags aren't bigger than the girlfriend's handbag! Slingbags for men are always acceptable! :) I encourage Rafiq to use one all the time cuz I hate it when he ends up stuffing his wallet la, handphone la and whatever la in my bag. So berat tau!

Hey, it's better than carrying your girlfriends handbag which irks the hell out of me! I posted about it a long time ago and how I hate it! Men out there, DONT CARRY YOUR GF'S HANDBAG unless of course she's a cripple!! Your machoness will be lost forever!!

  10. My husband has a manbag but it is more like a brief case because he only has it for his work stuff.
And he happily carries around my purse with hearts all over it.

  11. LOL! You remind me of hubby carrying his mother's shoulder bag last time just so to help her, he looked so funny! Men shouldn't be carrying any bags at all.

You would never guess what's in his handbag. A gun maybe or he must be a collector or something, lol!

  14. man bag - a big no no. carry a gym bag or a stylish back pack or something like that is ok. unless u wanna set a trend for the male species to carry one. umbrella pun some men are having a hard time to carry, apa lagi a bag.
anyway, i love the men's team gymnastic this morning. china was on the roll, japan got second and usa managed to steal the bronze from germany/russia (?). that was nice.
then michael phelps was awesome in swimming. hey where's daniel bego?
sigh.. oh where oh where can our athletes be? at least the badminton players are doing something right.

  17. Rose - I am a huge sports fan :D And my favourites would be the track and field events, the marathon, swimming (even though I can't swim) and gymnastics. Oh and recently I've just added basketball to that list ... hehehe ...

  18. Rozella - Oh yeah, they look more like thugs la ... LOL! But they're really cool when it comes to basketball la, I was in awe with some of the moves they made!

  19. Rozella - It's not women with the handbags that I have issues with, it's men with handbags ... LOL!

Ok, ok, I'll stop making fun of metro-sexuals ... LOL!

  20. Syura - Over confidence, that's what was wrong with them the last time. They were really awesome, I'm glad I managed to catch it. Now I'm looking forward to their next game :D

I don't know. I'm more of the 'hands-free' kinda person. I hate having to carry anything when I'm outside, let alone manbags ... LOL!

I know what you mean, I use wifey's handbag as a place to stuff my things too ... hehehe ... I used to carry a pouch but ended up feeling uncomfortable with it. I guess I'm just an old fashioned geezer ... hehehe ...

I agree, never carry your wife's/girlfriends handbag, so uncool. Well, unless of course you were threatened with bodily harm la ... LOL!

  21. Angela - First of all, welcome to my blog :D

    ReplyDelete
  23. Kadus Mama - LOL! I see that a lot la ... And I don't see the rationale why they have to carry their other half's handbag?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Lxndreasb - Oh ya, an umbrella, that's another thing I don't carry. I'd rather walk in the rain than carry one ... LOL!

A sports bag, pouch or backpack is fine, but not those that look like a woman's handbag la ... hehehe ...

Well, I'm not holding my breath for the Malaysian athletes!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Janice - LOL! Don't worry Janice, our Malaysian athletes are not anything to shout about either!

  26. Hmmm...I wonder what you'd think of me when you see carrying a WOMAN'S handbag.

I sometimes do, you know. But, it's my wife's, of course. :-)

  27. Gah. My cousin and I were in the Bukit Bintang area once and we saw this hunk-of-burning-love sort of guy. A couple of things were wrong with the picture though.

    a) He had a manbag (that he was toting around in a very unmanly fashion).

    b) He was wearing extremely. Short. Pants. As in, hot pants.

    Gross.

    ReplyDelete
  28. So you're definitely a mans man!

I must admit, I do see these man bags and do question what's inside them...

  29. ahhh yes, the Olympic season can change a non-sport person into one, let alone someone who loves sports right? as for me, I love gymnastics.. haven't gotten chance to watch much of it yet unfortunately...

  30. Hi Nick,
I understand about the manbag but what is wrong with carrying plastic bags or even paper bags??? hhmm...

    ReplyDelete
  31. Perry - LOL! I shall reserve my comments for now :D Carrying your wife's handbag is okay la, but don't make it too much of a habit ... hehehe ... My wife knows I don't fancy carrying her handbag :D

    ReplyDelete
  32. Haizum - LOL! I've seen such a sight before and to be honest I was totally aghast. And you're absolutely right. It's totally gross!

  33. The World According To Me - Oh, I'm definitely a mans man :D Though an old fashioned one at that ... LOL!

I honestly would like to stop one of them one day and ask them for a peek into their bags :D

  34. Sting - You got that right. Even my kids are totally hooked to it that they actually are forsaking their regular cartoons to catch the Olympics ... LOL!

Unfortunately, I can't watch Olympic games on TV because I live on the other side of planet... different time zones...

I only watch the final results (or videotapes):o)

  39. Cidao - A bag is a different thing altogether. I'm referring to those that look like a handbag ... :D

Well, that happened to me when they had the Olympics in Athens four years ago. The timing was totally off for me ...
