MORE Things That Go Bump In The Night ...

This post is basically a follow up to my earlier ghostly posting. When I first posted things that go bump in the night, I never realized that there were so many of you bloggers out there with paranormal stories of your own and I was thrilled (yet frightened out of my pants ... LOL!) just reading all your comments on your own experiences with the supernatural. I guess no matter who we are, where we come from, we all have at least one eerie encounter to haunt us.

Anyways, let me get straight to the story telling :) This incident I'm about to relate happened to both me, my buddy Adrian and another friend. A couple of years ago, the three of us were coming back from out of town. It was a night trip and we decided to not use the highway (we were cheapskates and didn't want to pay the toll for the highway) so instead we used this old back road home. These roads are just single lane roads with not much to practically non existent road lights. Towns were few and far between and it was mostly covered with jungle on both sides expect when nearing the towns.

So there we were chatting away like we always do on our drives (well Adrian and me anyway, the other friend was nicely snoozing away in the back seat completely out of it), laughing and taking a slow easy drive home. The weather was fine for driving, the moon was out, the crickets were chirping, the wolves were howling (ok, I made up the part about the wolves ... LOL).

Then all of a sudden somewhere along the drive, I said, 'hey, do you smell that?'. I smelled some kind of sweet floral scent. We have an old wives (the poor wives are always blamed for this ... LOL!) saying here, that if you do smell sweet smelling scents at night, do not acknowledge it. Just keep it to yourself. I think it's rumoured that if you acknowledge it, the bloody ghost is gonna pick on you :) My buddy just gave me this glare and said, 'will you shut up.' (He's as much a coward as I am). Mind you, the time was around 11.50 pm or so (I checked!). So, we kept quiet about it and continued chatting, then a a couple of kilometres down the road, just after a sharp left curve, I saw this dark figure lying flat right across the road. My buddy saw it too at the exact same instant that I did.

Ok, I need to get in a short description of the surroundings here before I go any further. We in Malaysia drive on the left hand side of the roads and oncoming cars are on the right. This road was just a single lane road with oncoming traffic on my right (but there was hardly any traffic on the road at this time of night). There is not much runoff space on both the left and right side of the roads. It was basically covered with jungle both sides.

Back to story. This figure was lying across the middle of my side of the road and I was totally taken off guard by this as it was immediately after a sharp left corner but the moment I saw the figure, I instinctively swerved to avoid running over it. This is where I have to thank whatever gods there are out there. By nature, when a driver tries to avoid something in his part, he will instinctively swerve towards the area with more run off space. For me, the best option would have been to swerve right, onto the oncoming traffic lane (which was so open, inviting and practically empty at this time of the night) but instead I swerved left to avoid the figure and ended up bumping our way across grass, rocks, pebbles and whatnots just to avoid the figure!

The moment I managed to control the car and get back on the proper lane, there was this huge petrol tanker coming up on the right side of the road! Can you imagine that. If I had swerved towards the empty right lane, I'd have gone head on with that huge tanker at 100 kmh and I'd be writing my blog from heaven (then again, maybe hell ... hehehe) What of the figure you may ask.

Immediately after the near fatal miss, I slowed the car to a crawl, and both my buddy and me looked back to check on the figure but to our utter amazement there was nothing on the road! The figure couldn't have been more than 200 metres from where I slowed my car but there was nothing there but empty road. Even the tanker driver didn't show signs that there was anything lying on the road by continuing to speed along on his way. But till this day, we both swear upon our lives that we saw a figure lying on the road! We couldn't both be imagining the same thing at the same time, even while swerving the car earlier I know I caught a glimpse of the figure through my peripheral vision but now the figure simply vanished into thin air. There was nothing but jungle on both sides, so he couldn't have been a drunk from any outskirt town.

By this time, we were both visibly shaken and our other good buddy who had been sleeping blissfully in the back seat had woken up from the rough bumpy avoiding maneuver that I pulled earlier and asked what was going on. We related the incident to him right down to me smelling the sweet scent earlier and he said that probably by my acknowledging the scent (he's a firm believer and renowned expert in all things eerie) whatever evil out there decided to latch on to me. And apparently, according to my friend in the back, we were probably meant to have collided head on into the tanker. It was probably a 'dirty' place where some previous accidents had happened in the area and the place is basically haunted by whatever 'lives' there scouting for victims. I don't know what overcame me to swerve to the left but I'm not going to question fate.

Boy, was I freaked out by then. The next thing I knew, I was speeding my way out of there and trying to find the nearest entrance point to get on the highway. I wasn't going to stay on that back roads one second longer than I had to. Glad to say, we all made it back home safely from that incident. I seriously believe that what we saw on the road was something supernatural. I know for a fact that I saw it, my buddy saw it but we both cannot recall if it was really a figure of a human being or something else. All we know is we saw something lying across the road. (Btw, we were both sober, well fed, well rested and totally sane at the time of the incident)

It still freaks me out to this very day and I've avoided the back roads like the plague nowadays, especially after hearing many more stories regarding eerie stuff going on on those roads! How many of you believe that ghosts do try to get victims 'joining' them. How many of you believe that evil picks on the weak (like me ... hehehe). How many of you have eerie incidents like these? I'd love to hear about it.

And Barrett, I'm looking forward to your ghostly encounters posting :) Don't keep me waiting too long buddy ... LOL!

  3. I don't know what's scarier....the body on the road or the fact that if you'd swerved right instead of left you would be...well no need to go into details. It's like sliding doors - you make one decision over another and the outcome can change your life forever. Shudders.....

I've never heard that thing about
smelling something sweet but I'll be sure and not mention it if I should ever feel my nostrils twitching.

    Great post Nick :)

  7. Nick, I've read that the genre you like to read is Clive Cussler, but I think you've got a bit of Stephen King going on there buddy!
Love your post, keep on scaring us :)

  8. Creepy! I totally believe you though! Thanks for the shout out in the post! I will be posting my eerie encounters in our Editorial Sundays section this Sunday! I am actually planning on doing a trackback from this article!
I do believe that ghost lay in wait. Some pretty creepy stuff happened at "The Anderson House" in the town that I grew up in, Lexington Missouri. "The Anderson House" served as a military hospital for the union during the civil war! The floors are still bloodstained and bullet holes riddle the walls. Right before I moved away from Lexington my friends and I snuck into the Anderson House on Halloween! Scary! I didn't see anything, but I could hear LOTS of things! Not to mention SEVERE tempertaure changes! If you are ever in the states, you have to visit Lexington Missouri and tour the battle grounds and the haunted "Anderson House!" Take care my friend! Great post!

  9. Gosh! That was scary. I often drive home late at night with the windows down. Sometimes I smell the sweet fragrance of flowers along one particular stretch of the highway. I've heard before about how this is associated with the presence of pontaniaks and spooked myself out too. But your encounter is so real, I really wouldn't ever want that to happen to me! Anyway, I later discovered the smell along our highway came from the rows of flowering plants!

  10. Wild tale Nick - Id like to believe that the dark figure was trying to help you avoid being in the accident, but the suspect sweet scent kinda ruins that theory! LOL As far as do ghosts try to take the living with them, Ive no doubt that some do...just like some live people are always eager to get us into trouble with them.
Alls well that ends well, right mate?

  11. Gypsy, I still shudder to this very day thinking what wud have happend if I did swerve the other way. Guess I had some lucky angel looking out for me. Yeah, don't say a thing if you do smell something sweet ... LOL!

  12. Meleah, it was even scarier going through it in person ....

  15. Barrett, Thanx for believing we actually saw something. And If I'm ever in the States, I'll definitely visit exington Missouri and tour the battle grounds and the haunted "Anderson House!" but definitely with a whole load of other people together, you konw what a coward I am ... LOL! Looking forward to your Sunday editorial.

  16. Blur ting, LOL! I don't think the sweet smell I whiffed came from any plants though. And I had the car window up and the air conditioning on even!

  17. Lavender, I would have like to believe that too, but that HUGE speeding tanker gave me reasons to believe otherwise. Yup, I definitely do believe that there is some major evil happenings going on in this world!

  18. Pretty creepy stuff there, pal.

I've only experienced the paranormal once. The Wife and I were staying at a bed and breakfast and Michelle thought I was in the bathroom. She heard the water running and toilet flush... and then I walk into the room from the hall... nobody in the bathroom. No evidence of water in the sink, and all of Michelle's cosmetics were on the floor. All night long we kept feeling a cat or small dog jumping on and off the bed. The following morning, we asked the owners about their cat... and they didn't have one.

    We've never been back...

  19. Seiche, scary is an understatement! I had the same kind of experience like you, again with Adrian. We stayed at this holiday resort hotel and I could hear the toilet door open, the flush going, etc. But when I asked him the next day if he used the bathroom, he thought it was me. Man, we left the very next day! Spooky bud, real spooky!

  38. As you read, I followed up with two stories of disappearing people over on my blog. I tried to write them in a style befitting a ghost story. They are both quite true and quite scary. Josie, thanks for adding links to these on your blog. Did you collect the first round of these stories as well?
