I'm not as young as I used to be (duh!) I'm 40 years old (or 40 years young, depends on how you look at it) and there are days when my body feels like it belongs to a 70 year old man! It aches and creaks in places I never even knew existed. I guess old age (I'm only 40, how can I be considered old!!) catches up with everyone eventually.
It was only yesterday that I was 30 and felt so energetic in everything that I do. I'm still energetic mind you, but my body sometimes refuses to go along with my mind and soul! Half the time it rebels against what I wanna do. And the worst thing is I can't really do anything about it. If that uncooperative body feels like aching and giving me hell, it'll do just that!
There was a time, not too long ago at that, that I could stay up real late, like 3-4am and then wake up fresh the next day and go to work and do the same thing all over again. Now, I feel woozy around 10 pm, can you believe that? I still remember the days when my buddy and me used to hang out till the wee hours of the morning (sometimes with another friend) and then head home, get a couple of hours of sleep and go to work the next day. And we did this almost nite. And we felt no after effects at all.
Now, after I head home from work, do my regular evening run (which sometimes I find stupid excuses to skip), have dinner and the wife and me would adjourned to the family hall to catch a couple of our favourite shows after the kids head to bed, which normally runs until midnight, but most nites I'll be dozing off halfway through the shows ... siggghhh ....
I'm still a kid at heart, my wife always says that I clown around too much. I'm not a very serious person and I act and think like I'm still a kid at times (yeah, Adrian, don't laugh, we both act the same ... LOL!) I mean I do know when to be serious (like never ... hehehe). I do stuff that I used to do in my twenties or even thirties but then my body rebels against what I do and shows its displeasure with me abusing my body by aching and creaking like it was gonna fall apart right that minute.
There are days when I wake up in the middle of the night to go to the toilet and the moment I put my feet on my bedroom floor and walk to the toilet, you can hear my joints cracking like it was the fourth of July of something! Every joint that could possibly crack would crack and half the time I fear my neighbors would wake up from all the racket I cause ... LOL!
I'm a person who really can't sit still for very long at home (well, unless I was blogging that is ... LOL!). I get bored sitting around being unproductive for too long. So I'm always finding some stuff to do, be it messing with my car, cleaning the house, etc, etc, etc. The thing is, nowadays after doing these things, I get pretty drained out much faster than before. And the aches last much longer than before also.
But sometimes it's weird, I can run miles but just following the wife grocery shopping drains me out. My legs would ache, my body would get tired and I'd be bugging her to hurry up so we could go home. And I'm not doing anything really strenuous except pushing the trolley!
Time really flies when you're having fun they say. It was only yesterday that I was so full of energy and suddenly one day it dawns upon you that you're no longer young, no matter how much you try to still do the things we used to do when we're younger it justs get harder to do them the same way. I guess this happens to almost everyone (there are exceptional few I guess).
With that said and done, it doesn't mean I'm gonna let that thing they call 'old age' get the better of me. I'm gonna give it a run for its money! No matter how much aches it throws my way after a strenuous running session, I'm gonna go out there and run some more. I still feel young at heart and I still act young at heart, aches and all. I always tell my wife I'm gonna live to be at least a hundred!
I may complain about this (I'm the perennial complainer by the way) but I'm not gonna sit on my butt and not do a thing about this. Like I said, I'm gonna fight this and before long I'm gonna be as close to being much more fitter and active like I was a couple of years back. You mark my words :) No more dozing off on the couch while watching TV (urmm, that one I can't guarantee cos I do so love to sleep ... LOL!).
Buddy! I know exactly how you feel! Yesterday went to the gym and believe me all my bones are aching today! Last night I was so tired after that but becasue wifey had gone out had to stay with Boo and keep her company alone until she got back and I was so tired and just wanted to fall asleep!
ReplyDeleteOld age is catching up and while my mind is still 18 I'm not! LOL
Adrian, glad to know I'm not alone in this ... LOL! Welcome to the old fogeys club! Buddy, LOL!
ReplyDeleteI'm a card carrying member of the old fogeys club if the popping and creaking in my kness is any indication. Getting up in the morning and walking downstairs sounds like I'm making popcorn in my joints!
ReplyDeleteSometimes I think I should just say to h&ll with it all and buy one of those motorized electric power chairs, start wearing my pants up around my armpits and yelling at the neighborhood kids to get off my lawn...
Seiche, you mean there's a card for old fogeys like us? Damn, I knew I was missing out on something ... LOL!
ReplyDeleteAnd I can totally relate to that popping and creaking of the knees buddy!
Tell me about it. I have the same problem. Everything seems well oiled while I'm running but when I get off the chair or bed, the bones inside my feet feel like they're falling apart!
ReplyDeletei would actually blame on the fewd we consume these days, fewd aren't as fresh and as gewd as it is today. i won't blame it on age, since i'm at the age of 28 feeling the aches, my knees getting weak and i'm too lazy to do anything -_-"
ReplyDeletesometimes sick of it but dun feel like doing anything about it. it sucks really XD
well, guess i'm trying to say, live life to the fullest XD
I've been helping my hubs to re-arrange the furniture in the house today... guess what.... now whole body liao... sigh !! :(
ReplyDeleteJanice Ng
I have to agree nick, you shouldn't let old age get into you. Jogging is really good and when you get tired of it, you can even try other sports like tennis perhaps, or bowling. Well, these are my favorites but I can't seem to have the time to engage in them because of my job. I just turned 29 a few days ago, and it just occurred to me that I should start keeping myself active again. Like you, I always think I am young...^^
ReplyDeleteI know just how you feel. The aging process. Ugh!
ReplyDeleteIm not 40 yet, but I certainly feel like I am.
I cannot "party" like I could back in my 20's. (No way) Now I need a solid 8 hours of sack time or I am just plain useless.
As for the aches and pains, my knees are the only issue I have as of late....I am sure things will only worsen as I move up in my years.
Oh goodness..is this what I have to look forward to?? LOL..j/k
ReplyDeleteI started boxing at 43 - that's all I'm gonna say... except.. holy crap it's harder each day.
ReplyDeleteWhat a relief! Its not just me! I feel young inside too, but my mid-fourties body defies that feeling - with a vengance! Im frequently heard grumbling - "Im too young for this!!!"
ReplyDeleteThanks Nick!
Blur ting, glad to know I'm not the only one with creaky bones after my runs ... LOL!
ReplyDeleteMaslight, welcome to my blog. Yes, maybe it's the food we consume but I mostly eat home cooked food.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, I am trying to live my life to the fullest ... LOL!
Hope to see you around more often.
Hi Janice, I know how that feels ... LOL! Hope you aching body gets better soon.
ReplyDeleteLordmanilastone, I'm not into tennis and stuff like that. At one time I used to bowl a long time ago with my buddy but work and stuff got in the way. I used to be involved in martial arts but the same thing happened. Luckily I can still manage to squeeze in running into my life cos you can run anytime of the day :)
ReplyDeleteHey Meleah, don't let my scary post about aging scare you ... LOL! I guess if we take care of ourselves now and keep on doing the things we currently do (the good things that is ... LOL!) our body should be able to adjust better in our old age, right? (you think Nick? LOL!)
ReplyDeleteDiamond, you'd better believe it woman ... LOL! Just kidding.
ReplyDeleteIt's not as bad as I make it out to be, after awhile, you get used to the aches, creaks, cracks and pops! LOL!
Anonymous boxer, wow boxing at 43, that's way cool :) And yeah, I can imagine how hard it gets everyday.
ReplyDeleteThe same happens to me. It gets harder and harder and even more harder to the things I used to do a few years back!
Lavender - it's so nice to know I've got loads of company in my old age ... LOL!
ReplyDeleteYup, welcome to the joys old age, Nick - not exactly all it's cracked up to be! My only fear is wondering what we're gonna be like at 70!!
ReplyDeleteNick- Hey there buddy! Great post! I am almost 25 but I have certain places that pop every once in a while! I may be in real trouble by 40! It is good that you are going to be more active, that can't be anything other than healthy! Good luck in this new endeavor! I think excersize helps us both body and soul! I can still pull the all nighters, just not as frequently as before! Great post my friend!
ReplyDeleteJosie, I have to agree with you. If I'm feeling like this when I'm 40, what will it be like when I'm 50, let alone 70.
ReplyDeleteI'm dreading growing old ... LOL!
Hi Barrett, I wish some genius would invent some miracle potion or something that will keep us youthful for all eternity :D (wake up, Nick! Stop dreaming),
ReplyDeleteDon't worry buddy, you're still young and god, how I envy your youth ... LOL!
Hey Nick,
ReplyDeleteYou said a mouthful buddy! Did you mention the noises you make when you pick up something or when you crouch down? Talk about loud! Glad it's not just me.
Nick, I'm not on my 40's yet, but I suffer the same as yours....add to the list my backaches and my far-sightedness. LOL! I think i blame it to the kind of work we have. Too much time with the computer, with no stretching/workout. And as mentioned earlier, blame it also to the kind of food that we eat. My blog tells I'm a vegetarian. That is my way of building body resistance and getting "young-look-and-feel". What a term. Pardon. Ha ha ha. And don't forget to get a complete food supplement!
ReplyDeleteMenopauseprincess, I forgot to mention those noises ... LOL! The creaks never seem to stop, in fact they just get worse! One of these days I'm inclined to think something will just snap and fall off ... LOL!
ReplyDeleteAlbine, nice to see you here. Thank god my eye sight is perfect (or so I'd like to think) ... LOL! Yes, sitting in front of the computer all day is basically one big main culprit!
ReplyDeleteI can't really go vegetarian cos I'd be lost without meat so I try to balance my meals nowadays.
I think it all boils down to just getting a good workout and not sitting here blogging so much ... LOL!
Drink lots and lots of milk, Nick!
ReplyDeleteI read somewhere that the World's oldest living person (which happens to be an old lady about the age of 100+) lives on drinking milk daily!
She can still walk and talk and Salsa! (OK, the salsa part was a joke)
Try lah.. maybe can lessen the cracking sound of your joints. LOL. I've just started drinking milk too this week! :D
PS: Hey, they say life begins at 40!
Just wait until you're 50, then tell me about it....
ReplyDeleteI look into the mirror and see a man that is almost 50. I look away and see a man who is 25.
ReplyDeleteAs long as your brain still thinks it is 25 you are doing good! Do not believe the man you see in the mirror.
But man, it hurts to get out of bed in the morning. :)
Nice Blog!
Kyle
Hey Nick, At least you CAN run...lol. The most I can manage is a brisk walk but then my back gives out before my feet do. Alas our bodies always seem to give up before our minds and the two are less in sync as time goes on.
ReplyDeleteNick-Hey there old friend! LOL! Just kidding, everyone is saying that 40's are the new 20's. AOL online just ran a series called 40 and fabulous! Aren't you feeling 40 and fabulous?! The best is yet to come right?! Give the family my best and take care friend! May sound crazy but I have heard that yoga can help with the aches and pains of aging! Have a great week buddy!
ReplyDeleteCindy, yeah, I've heard that saying about life beginning at 40 and if I find the person who made that up, I'm gonna smack him/her silly ... LOL!
ReplyDeleteMilk? oh man, I hate milk! No wonder I'm creaking like a rickety chair all over. Oh well, guess I'm gonna have to start drinking some milk and see if it help ... :D
Quah, don't la frighten me like that ... LOL! I'm 40 and I feel like 70, let alone turning 50!
ReplyDeleteKyle & svet, I never can tell which one of you is commenting ... LOL!
ReplyDeleteOh, I try not to look in the mirrors too much, it can get pretty depressing :D Yeah, you're right though, it how young you feel that matters but the creaks always managed to remind me how old I am!
Gypsy, the running part is not the problem. I feel fine when I run. The stopping part is the problem. I feel like I'm gonna fall apart after the run ... LOL!
ReplyDeleteBarrett, yoga? I can even bend my elbows at times, let alone contorting into all sorts of impossible shapes and positions ... LOL!
ReplyDeleteI remember 40 and those were the good 'ol days ;P
ReplyDeleteMicki, someone told me that life begins at 40, I'm still waiting for it to manifest itself ... LOL!
ReplyDelete10 pm?! The night has only just begun! :D
ReplyDeleteLis, urmmm a long time ago in a land far far away, 10pm was indeed the start of my night, but alas, old age has caught up with me ... sigghhhhh .....
ReplyDelete
