An Eye For An Eye

I'm a funny little person (if you can call me that). When I was young I so wanted to use glasses. Really I did. All my cousins back then had glasses and I though it made them look so cool and intelligent. Fortunately or unfortunately (depends on how you look at it) I had fine 20/20 vision! So I didn't require any glasses. I'd look at my cousins with envy and would wish my eyesight deteriorated so my mom would take me and make a pair for myself.

Initially my mom did take me to the optician to get my eyes tested and the results came out just fine. Drats I would say to myself. I absolutely must have a pair of glasses. I can't be the only one of my cousins not to have glasses. I'd try every trick in the book to get one. I'd fake headaches saying that it's cos of eyestrain. I'd even complain of fuzzy vision at times. After a few more visits to the doctors and the optician, she was on to my tricks and she never did entertain my requests for glasses from then on.

But did you think I'd give up? Nooooo, not me. I was so set of getting glasses. So, I cooked up a story one day at school and told my class teacher that I could hardly see the blackboard any longer. She switched my place to the front of the class and even then I'd pretend to squint and sometimes even getting up from my seat to read what's on the board. I thought maybe my teacher would be able to convince my mom better. And one fine day, she did call my mom and explain that maybe I did need glasses to which my mom told her that I was just faking it and to not fall for my theatrical acts anymore. The glare I got from my teacher after that was enough to convince me to move places to the back of the class again ... LOL!

Well, in time I finally gave up wanting to ever wear glasses. You could even say, good sense prevailed. Why did I need glasses when I had absolutely fine eyes. And over time I even came to hate glasses of any kind even sunglasses cos I'd start feeling uncomfortable wearing them for too long. I was glad I didn't need glasses. But you think that would be the end of it? Nooooo, all those years of faking to need glasses came back and bit me hard in the butt cos now I actually do need glasses!

My eyesight is no longer what it was years ago. I'm not blind or anything and I can see just fine, it's the night driving part that's been giving me trouble for a few years now. I suffer from astigmatism and it gets worse when it rains at night while I'm driving. I have been prescribed a couple of years ago to wear glasses for night driving and I did use them for a while. But like I said earlier I cannot wear glasses for too long cos they become utterly unbearable. And besides I don't think I look good in glasses. I'm a vain pot, I'll admit that much.

So I ditched the blooming things. So be it if I have to see starbursts in every oncoming cars headlights but for the life of me I ain't gonna wear them horrid glasses no more! They were this huge framed glasses that made me look like some pimply kid in high school or something. I don't even remember why I picked that particular frame, most probably cos it was the cheapest frames around. Oh, did I forget to mention I'm a cheapskate too? No? Well, I am ... LOL! But my night driving and in fact even my normal day vision is taking a turn for the worse the older I get and I don't think I could put off getting a pair of glasses for myself any longer.

The thing is I don't know how to go about getting one and some of those frames I've seen in the shops out there cost an arm and three legs. Man, when did these frame get so blooming expensive? I could get the cheap ones but I seriously don't want to look like some nerd (no offense to all you bespectacled nerdies out there) walking around. I have a reputation to keep, you know!

'HAHAHAHAHA, Nick, reputation, you? That's a joke, right?'

Aw shaddup! Where was I? Oh, the cost of frames. Yeah, they're pretty steep. Some even claim to be forged out of titanium, kryptonite, adamantium and the likes that they're supposed to withstand a direct nuclear detonation or something. I mean, get real people, why would you want your glasses to survive a nuclear hit when you'd probably be blown to smithereens? Crazy right? I'm seriously not willing to fork out that much money for a pair of glasses.

Maybe I should look into that Zenni Optical eyeglasses that I've been seeing on some bloggers posts out there. They've been harping that it's pretty cheap and there's a huge selection available to chose from and anything that is cheap almost always attracts my attention ... LOL! I'm just wondering how cheap is their cheap but I guess with a line like this : Zenni Optical: Sell Rx Glasses $8 with case!, they're probably real cheap ... LOL! Anyway, that aside, never wish for something you don't really need and don't really want cos eventually it'll find a way to get back at you ... I wonder how I'll look in this pair of glasses? What do you think? Oh wait, you guys don't know what I look like ... LOL!

  6. Hi Nick! I am still laughing after reading this paragraph twice: "And one fine day, she did call my mom and explain that maybe I did need glasses to which my mom told her that I was just faking it and to fall for my theatrical acts anymore. The glare I got from my teacher after that was enough to convince me to move places to the back of the class again ... LOL!"

  17. Isn't life ironic - you faked the poor eyesight to get glasses, and now you need glasses but don't want them!

Your post has made me laugh!

I have terrible eye sight and I wear contact lenses most days. But they cost a fortune! (I wear daily disposable, astigmatism ones.) Sometimes I can't afford to buy contacts, so I have to wear my spectacles.

The specs in your blog look like a fine pair to wear!

  18. I was so envious of those who wear glasses, i borrowed my eldest bro's glasses (who was also glasses-envy like me) and show off to my friends. A boy told me the glasses was too big for my face...and i ended up forking out money to buy cheap glasses with smaller frame. LOL!

Years after, i am one of those who can't live without her glasses bcos of eye-sight problem. But of course, today we have contact lenses for more options. You know la how glasses limit your movement. Ha!

You know what, when I was a lil kid I used to want glasses badly too.. I was kinda envious of my friends who did wear glasses. I always thought glasses were intimidating.. you know, looking all intelligent and stuff. LOL! But that was LAST TIME!

I hope the glare from the day to day use of me laptop won't affect my eyesight. *touch wood*

  29. The world according to me - Ironic is an understatement ... LOL! I've never ever considered contact lenses cos I think they're more of a hassle than glasses. I've seen some of my friends have trouble with them and it's enough to frighten me ... LOL!

  30. Chegu Carol - LOL! Nice to know I'm not the only one to have glasses envy ...

I still remember back then when those huge framed glasses were the in thing ... LOL!

  32. Shemah - That's exactly how I felt, that's why I wanted so badly to own a pair. Now, I'm trying my best to actually have to wear them. It's funny how life works doesn't it?

If the glare from your laptop starts affecting your eyes then I'd probably go blind first seeing as how I sit and stare at my PC almost all day ... LOL!

  33. Meleah - 9 years old? That's a long time to be wearing glasses.

  37. I can't believe you wanted to wear glasses! I hate wearing them! I've switched to disposable contact lenses and it costs me so much S$4-5 a day. I can't wear glasses anymore cos they make me feel very unwell all day long. I think it's due to dry eyes.

Like you, I have problems reading/driving at night due to astig. Must admit, we're getting old.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Marlene - LOL, now that Harry Potter fellow sure looks like one nerdy little fellow with those glasses of his!

I think contact lenses are more trouble than they're worth. But I guess it's good for vanity purposes ... LOL!

  41. Tammy - It's like a magnet for babies to grab aren't they? LOL! I wonder why actually, maybe cos of the reflections in the lenses???

  42. BT - Siggghhhh, we are getting old aren't we?

I can't believe I wanted to wear glasses either. What an idiot I was back then ... LOL!

I never knew disposable contact lenses cost that much a day!

  43. As a child, I grew up seeing bboth my parents wearing glasses.. and so was my brother. I was the only one in the family not wearing glasses.. :-(

I've always told my parents how much I wanted to wear glasses like them too, because I see people with glasses as "smart" and "brainy". Sometimes, I'd wear my mom's huge collection of glasses and pretend like it's mine.

I finally got my wishes to wear glasses - which I regret to this day. I try to avoid wearing glasses whenever I can, but eventually, I still look for them whenever I'm driving, watch tv, movies etc. *sob*

    ReplyDelete
  44. Cindy - LOL! My mom had this HUGE pair of glasses that if I put it on my face it would have looked like a mask!

Yeah, I'm regretting the very day that I wished I could use glasses cos now I absolutely hate them ... LOL!

Sometimes we should really be careful for what we wish for, right? But then, I've been wishing for a million dollars and nothings happened yet ... sigghhhhh ...
