I think I've posted before about how big a coward I am when it comes to all thing supernatural right? And that how wifey is the brave one in the family, right? She's like the superwoman in the family. Well, a couple of days ago, I found out that wifey is only human and was actually as scared as I was while watching this horror movie. I think it was Friday last week, wifey, the boys and me were in the hall watching TV like we always do after dinner.
We've got a couple of shows that we like to watch on Fridays and one of them is something called Restaurant Makeover. That particular show starts a little later in the night, around 10.00pm and the boys look forward to watching it as well cos it's a Friday night and they can stay up later than normal cos on school nights, I send them to bed at 9.30pm.
While waiting for that show to start, wifey would normally channel surf and she happened to chance upon a local horror movie called 'Jangan Pandang Belakang' (Don't Look Back) that was going to clash with the Restaurant Makeover show. Now, while we both don't really watch local movies all that much, this was one that we wanted to see so we opted to watch the movie instead seeing as how there would be a repeat of the Restaurant Makeover show a couple of days later.
The kids weren't too pleased with that decision with the younger fellow (the more vocal one) making a big fuss about it and complaining that he didn't want to see a horror movie cos he would be too afraid to sleep later. But us being adults, well we vetoed his complaints (LOL) and watched the movie instead. Ok, before we go any further, remember I said I'm a big coward when it comes to anything supernatural? Well, that includes horror movies too.
While I love watching horror movies, I'd always have a pillow or throw cushion with me to hide behind (don't you dare laugh!) when the scene gets too spooky. I'd normally cower in fright behind the pillows and peep through the whole movie (I can see you laughing over there!). Wifey on the other hand would normally sit through the whole movie like a if nothing happened. Told you she was a superwoman. LOL!
But this time it was a little different. When the movie finally started, it started off with an exorcism scene in a small village with the local bomoh (a traditional healer) trying to cast away an evil entity from this old man who eventually died. Suddenly there was this one scene just before the intro credits started rolling when this pontianak (local version of a vampire) started crawling down from the top of the house roof. Now this would all be normal for a horror movie but then I hear wifey scream!
Of course, being your regular full time coward, I look at her and scream right along with her. The boys who are already cowering on the floor in front of us with cushions all around them, looks at us screaming and starts to scream along too. Now, the whole family is screaming (I'll bet you guys can just pictures us) and covering our faces with pillows.
After the initial excitement dies down, I ask wifey what the heck she screamed for and she said that figure of the pontianak crawling down took her by surprise cos she didn't notice it and it frighten the hell out of her. Darn! She got me and the boys all worked up for no reason ... hehehe ... I don't know why but she was really freaked out by that scene that throughout the movie (well, not the whole movie anyway) she joined me and the boys by watching the movie from behind our pillows ... LOL!
Actually I don't think the movie was that scary and I wasn't really scared at all, but after wifeys scream, well my imagination ran wild and my younger boy was also acting up and making a big fuss that he was scared, so eventually we opted to switch channels and watch Restaurant Makeover instead. If we did continue watching the movie, I was inclined to join the boys in their little pillow fort that they built.
I've always been terrified of watching horror movies, especially the local ones of yesteryear. They really are so darn creepy that when I was young and my whole family gathered in the living room to watch these movies every Friday night, I'd make a nice little fort of pillows to hide behind and just peek out from behind it and watch the movie. The worse thing is I'd have nightmares after that for days ... hehehe ... in fact I still do.
I remember once, a few years ago, I was all alone at home. It was a Saturday afternoon and I was watching this local horror show called Pontianak Harum Sundal Malam (please don't ask me to translate that to English ... hehehe) and after the show I could hardly take a nap cos I was so scared and it was in the middle of the afternoon mind you!
The thing is I love horror movies and I'd force myself to sit through them and watch them, with or without the pillows, though if there wasn't a pillow handy, I'd peek at it with one eye closed, like as if that would make the show less scarier ... LOL! Some of my favourites are The Exorcist, The Omen (the original one and not the remake), Poltergeist and who can forget Dracula ... hehehe ... The first time I watched The Exorcist when I was a small boy, I almost wet my pants! LOL!
Well, at least I now know that wifey does get scared too at times ... hehehe ... that sure makes me feel good cos most of the time something spooky happens, I'll always let her deal with it :D But honey, you're not allowed to get scared too much, ok? Cos if you do, just who the heck is going to handle the spooky stuff? Definitely not me and the boys. We're not cut out for work like that ... hahaha! Maybe we could get some phone cards that could connect us directly to the Ghost Busters or something ... LOL!
OMG...I hate horror movies. The Exorcist was the last one I watched and I couldn't sleep for months afterwards. I don't even watch them behind pillows cos the music scares me as much as what I'm looking at. There...now do you feel better?
ReplyDeleteHehe..i love to watch horror movie but just like you, i peek from behind my pillow. The most...scariest movie i've ever watched was this english zombie movie (I was 10 that time). I've forgotten the title already..but it was crazy that i had nightmare for weeks...
ReplyDeleteOooo! I LOVE scary movies! I just wish I had the sense to not watch them by myself, late at night. But I don't. So my dogs get squeezed a lot. LOL.
ReplyDeleteI haven't watched 'Jangan Pandang Belakang' but I did hear it's really spooky. The actors of the movie were really 'haunted' during the making though.. 'Pontianak Harum Sundal Malam' was not scary at all la Nick and I thought the pontianak was pretty!
ReplyDeleteI haven't watched a decent scary movie in a long time. The last I watched was an Indonesian real life documentary of ghosts and that was some scary $H1t!! The Exorcist is still the best la! And I agree, the remake of The Omen suckss!
Hahahahahahahaha....gosh, im having stomach cramps just reading this post lah Nick. Biar betul you and the whole family screamed in horror?! I can really imagine that moment.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE horror movies.
I especially love horror movies from Thailand and Korea. Exorcist, The Omen, Poltergeist..yup, my favourite too.
And like you, my husband don't. I am thinking of watching Congkak but no friend to go wif me cos hubby also dont to go. But then, i think that can wait cos i heard from some reviews, Congkak isn't as scary as Jangan Pandang Belakang.I havent watch that movie tho'. Should get it downloaded lah.
Of all the horror movies i've watched, one that got on my nerves...i must say Freddy Nightmare. It did make me scared of going to sleep for fear of having Freddy Krueger comes into my dream. Ha!
as usual whenever u talk about ghost stories, i would scroll until the last paragraph. u see i have a very crazy imagination and tend to scare myself. so i spared myself from the ordeal.
ReplyDeletebut i do watch sometimes, and my last one was the grudge 2. i just hate it when the ghost lady walks to the screen with her head down and long black hair, then suddenly pops put of the blardee screen.
szeeesh!
Okay, I really am regretting coming to your blog at this time of the night and reading this right now! Haiyoh... how to sleep lah? Hehehe I am a big fat chicken in this department! Hate horror movies, absolutely hate 'em!
ReplyDeleteMe and my daughter LOVE horror movies. She has a huge collection of them. She like the Freddy, Jason and Halloween ones best while I like the ghost ones better. We do the pillow thing too.
ReplyDeleteI can just imagine the 4 of you screaming.. LOL!
ReplyDeletewe can't watch horror movies.. too scary.. with or without pillows! got this friend whose idea of a great date is horror movies at the cinema! geez
I love Thai horror movies only :-D and I'm like your Wifey, would sit through the whole movie without a pillow..hahaha..
ReplyDeleteI like horror movies, but I don't like watching it alone. I want somebody to hold and hide my head off, heheee... But i did watch The Shining alone cos hubby's aslept. I heard it was a good horror movie. Good!!! It really scared me to death, from that time on, I wouldn't dare watch horror movies by myself.
ReplyDeleteSome people just can't think of the fact that a horror movie is just a movie. Your wifey is one person who can handle creepy situations in be it a movie or a real goofy one. You're a lucky man of the house, Nick, hehehe!
LOL!LOL!LOL!LOL!LOL!Nick my perut want to pecah d k...i can't stop laughing reading this entry!LOL!But i can soo totally relate to the part when wifey scream and everyone followed!! Cos i did that once and everyone around me started screaming like mad!!! You should see their faces ok..LOL!!!
ReplyDeleteI love to watch horror movies. My favorite!
But yea why do we always closed our eyes or cover our face when we are scared ar? and yet still want to watch horror movie? We are so confuse isn't? LOL!
Gypsy - Yeah, the Exorcist has a way of doing that to people. I had the same sleeping problem too! LOL! I thought and still think that is the best horror movie ever ...
ReplyDeleteOh, I feel so much better now, thaks Gypsy ... LOL!
Kadus Mama - Oh, good, I'm not the only pillow peeker around ... LOL! Why do we even put ourselves through the torture of watching a horror movie, I really don't now ... hehehe ...
ReplyDeleteCorrina - LOL! When it comes to scary movies, we normally don't have the sense not to watch it alone. At least you have your dog there ... hehehe.
ReplyDeleteSyura - Any horror movie I'm watching alone is scary ... hahaha ...
ReplyDeleteGosh, seriously? They were actually haunted on set? man, if I was one of the actors, I'd have quit the set la ... LOL!
Ok, remind me not to watch that Indonesian ghost documentary anytime soon! But knowing me, if it comes out, I'll watch it anyway. I'm a sucker for punishment ... LOL!
Nick...Nick...I think we have almost the same frequency. I was abt to blog abt some 'supernatural' stuffs as well just before I logged onto your blog. LOL!!! R u my long lost twin or something? We always talk abt similar stuffs at similar times...LOL!
ReplyDeleteAnyways, this weekend is packed and I'll try to blog abt it tmrw.
BTW, if all ghosts are like Slimer from Ghostbusters, I dun really mind la....but no spooky scary long haired ones!
Carol - Yes, we did, imagine the four of screaming in the middle of the night ... hahaha ... my neighbours must have thought we were crazy!
ReplyDeleteOk, those Thai movies takes the cake in being scary! I watch one a long time ago and I'm still freaked out by it!
I haven't watched the entire Jangan Pandang Belakang movie so I can't vouch for it. But from what I did see, it was spooky!
And don't have nightmares of Freddy Kruger tonight, k? LOL!
lxndreasb - LOL! I know another blogger who does that too whenever I post ghost stories (right Marzie? LOL!)
ReplyDeleteThe grudge was one movie that I totally could not grasp the plot! I was actually more dumb founded than scared when watching that movie ...
Rozella - Hahaha ... I'll put a disclosure the next time.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the big fat chicken club then! I'm a lifetime member of the club ... LOL!
I hate horror movies too but I can't help myself from watching them. Must be that sadistic streak I have in me!
Tammy - I'm more of a ghost movie fan rather than the Freddy Kruger kind. And one should not be without pillows during horror movies ... LOL!
ReplyDeleteSting - Yeah, we looked a sight, the four of us! LOL!
ReplyDeleteUrmmm, your friend is sick! LOL!
Monica - Thai horror movies will give me nightmares even in the day time, that's how spooky they are!
ReplyDeleteOh, another brave woman. I feel so ashamed! LOL!
Marlene - Well, I try to make it a point never to watch horror movies alone. I'd probably die of fright! LOL!
ReplyDeleteThe Shining was a pretty good spooky movie. I watched it quite some years back and I too watched it alone and was freaked out ... LOL!
Oh, I'm glad to have wifey around otherwise the boys and me would be lost when it comes to the supernatural ... hehehe ...
Emelda - I'm glad the post gave you such a kick! LOL!
ReplyDeleteWifey doesn't normally get scared of ghost movies, this was a first for her and with me and the boys being huge cowards, we could help but scream along ... hahaha ...
Yeah, why do we torture ourselves to watch horror movies when we're so afraid of them?
Blusher - LOL! What a coincidence. Strange things do happen in this world! Looking forward to checking out your spooky story.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I have to agree, if ghosts were like Slimer or Casper, that wouldn't be so bad, ya? LOL!
*laughs*
ReplyDeleteI know EXACTLY what the whole lot of you look like when your wife screamed then you screamed along with her, cause that always happens when us siblings watch a horror movie together! Everybody is already tightly sprung from the suspense, and ANY sudden movements at all will set my eldest sister off. Well. Lets just say "chain reaction" shall we? *chuckles*
I am the Biggest Baby in the world when it comes to horror flicks or scary anything. I can't even handle the previews.
ReplyDeleteHaizum - I'm glad we're not the only ones who are so wound up during a horror movie session ... LOL!
ReplyDeleteMeleah - Ok, at least I'm not a lost cause. I can take the preview on my own. Brave huh? LOL!
ReplyDeleteHaha ha, It's so funny. I can imagine your entire family all cowering in fear on the sofa, hiding behind pillows, watching horror movies. Quite cartoon you know :-)
ReplyDeletehahahahahahahahha.........oh my goodness....and I tot am the biggest 'tikus' when it comes to horror movie...now I know you're as bad as I am...but wait..you're a guy!!??? Does that make you even worst then me??? hahahahaha...kidding!! ;p
ReplyDeleteI can imagine the whole house screaming like nobody's business when your wifey started to scream hahahaha...
My hubby hasn't succeed in persuading me to watch any horror movie...and he will always laugh at me especially wen i close my face or eyes wen horror stuff comes on telly ;p Now I can tell him, am not alone!! hahahaha...
Yup!! On set! Apparently they managed to catch a 'person' in one of their rolls of films and lemme just say that that 'person' wasn't supposed to be in the shot! I heard they included that shot in the film but I dunno la.. Haven't watched the movie.. But there was a kid ghost captured in '3 men and a baby'. Have you seen it? It spooks me til this day! I hate kid ghosts!
ReplyDeleteBT - It was incredibly cartoonish la ... LOL! Something out of a Tom and Jerry show ... hehehe ...
ReplyDeleteAunty J - I'll glad admit I'm the worlds number one coward when it comes to ghostly stuff, even movies! LOL! Yes and I'm a guy some more! LOL!
ReplyDeleteSyura - I didn't really watch the whole movie so I can't really say if there was any weird 'extras' in the movie but I'm definitely gonna catch a repeat of it. But I'll have to get my pillows ready first though ... LOL!
ReplyDeleteThey had a kid ghost in 3 men and a baby? I saw that show countless times and didn't know this. Ok, now I've just got to download the saw and watch it again ... hehehe ...
He he...even the title is enough to make me stay away! ;)
ReplyDeleteMan, I hate horror movies. Sometimes I have nightmares through the night.
ReplyDeleteIt scares the hell out of me...
I like action, science fiction movies most. :o)
Marzie - LOL! Next time I'll put a title like Home sweet home or something. That'll get you to read it ... LOL!
ReplyDeleteCidao - LOL! It's nice to know I'm not the only coward in this world ... I love science fiction too.
ReplyDeletethe only time neighbours would come and ring our doorbell to see what's with the shouting and clanging, would be when Manchester United score the winning goal!!!
ReplyDeleteOther than that, it would be just a winge or two from hubby n me (i usually close my eyes when the scary part comes, or close my ears, cos the music scares me more than the darn movie itself!!)
Lxndreasb - LOL! Well, I know my whole neighborhood are MU fans judging by the screams I hear when they play ...
ReplyDeleteI can stand the music, it's the visuals that freaks me out ... LOL!
no horror movie for me..i heard it;s a good movie. ilove restaurant make over
ReplyDeleteDeana - I didn't watch the entire movie so I'm not sure if it's good or not but judging from what I saw, it looked promising.
ReplyDelete
