Pain, Pain, Go Away ...

Every morning when I get up for work, I'll always laze around in bed for an extra couple of minutes before I really have to force myself to get up and go get ready for work. But the difference with this morning was, the moment I woke up I thought I was crippled!

I could hardly move my left arm without eliciting a sharp jolt of excruciating pain from the edge of my shoulder all the way down my arm to my elbow. That's it, I thought, I'm doomed. I'm going to be crippled in bed forever (touch a thousand woods). I lay there and stare at the ceiling for a bit. Wifey is downstairs getting the boys ready for school. I know she'll be up in a few minutes tough.

So, while waiting for her, I slowly test the rest of my body by moving around and everything seems to be okay except the left shoulder section and the upper arm. I realize that I can't lift my arm above my waist without feeling a sharp jolt of pain. And I really mean pain. I was fine last night before sleeping so I guess it must have had something to do with the way or position I slept last night. I've woken up with a stiff neck a few times before but this is like pain I've never felt before. I finally manage to sit up and wifey walks in the room.

Wifey has to help me out of my T-shirt so I can go take my shower cos I can't lift my arm to take it off. That's how bad it was. After my shower wifey rubs some of this ointment and gives my shoulder and back a rub down and she says she can practically feel this lump of knotted muscles (urmmm, maybe not muscles la cos I don't have any ... hehehe ... more like veins). With wifeys help, I struggle to get ready for work. I should really take the day off and go see a doctor but I'm a stubborn fellow. Besides I have stuff to do in the office today.

The drive to work was a killer cos I drive a manual car and every single shift of the transmission sends a jolt of pain up my arm. I'm practically screaming ouch, arrghh, ouch, arrghh with every move I make and it feels like the longest and most painful 10 minute drive from my house to my work place ever! Well, I thought it would be an easy day at the office so I wouldn't have to use my arm too much, but it just so conveniently happens, I have to drive all the way to the heart of the city for an appointment and I know I'm going to regret not taking the day off today.

What is wrong with me these days? I go to sleep feeling healthy and fine and I wake up feeling like a semi cripple! This is not really the first time something like this has happened to me but this is by far the most painful one though. It's been like 8 hours already and the pain is as bad if not worse than this morning. And if it doesn't go off or at least subsides a little by the time I get home, I know wifey is going to insist I go see a doctor or something. She says it's better to get it checked out cos it might be more that meets the eye (gee, that sounds like the transformers la ... LOL!) And she just maybe be right.

I'm not young any longer (but 41 is not old right? right?? RIGHT???) and I've got to take a little more care of this battered body of mine. I can't afford to be bed ridden or anything like that. I've got responsibilities. I've got a family to care for. Sometimes it can be just a tad frightening when things like this happen. I bet I could easily shake this off in my younger days. Now things take a little bit longer to heal. Sighhhh ....

You know, I've always wondered that if anything were to happen to me (touch wood!), would my family be taken care of? Would they be able to fend for themselves? I would love to think so. I don't want them to suffer if I'm no longer around. We're not the richest family in the world neither are we the poorest and we've gone through some real rough times a couple of years back when I was retrenched and had to face some pretty serious financial turmoil which resulted in me looking for the best credit cards on offer and trying to get some easy online credit card approval particularly when balance transfer cards are concerned just to be able to make sure that I could provide for wifey and the boys.

Though I'm working hard to get back on the road to financial recovery, I'm not 100% there yet but I do know that I want to be healthy and still be around to the ripe old age of at least 100 (I've always told wifey I want to live to be at least a hundred. LOL!) and to do that I've just got to take care of myself a little better. So, I just might go and see a doctor after work today just to be sure that pain isn't something more serious than a pinched nerve or knotted muscle. Oh my god, I just realized that if the pain doesn't subside by tomorrow I can't go for my 10K orange run race at the curve this Sunday!!! And this was supposed to be the first race I'm taking part in a long time ... ok, that makes my decision much easier, to the doctors it is after work today!

You all have a nice weekend and if you don't see me online over the weekend and judging by the numbness I still feel in my arm, that means the pain is still there and I'm laid up in bed and I've probably missed my race and would be in a foul mood and brooding all weekend ... hahaha ...

  2. That's exactly how I felt when I woke up the other day.. except I couldn't walk!!! and like you, it hurt so bad but the pain progressed even more as the day went on... OMG! I cried just walking from my bed to allie's cot. And for some reason, the doctors are still doing further tests on my blood. I was supposed to get the results by tuesday evening.. and it's friday!

I hope you're feeling better, though. Take some painkillers and hope that you'll be able to run your 10k race! :)

As for the 10k orange race - what a coincidence, we have a 3k banana race over here! I'm not competing though. I may be eating bananas at the weekend, but I won't be running dressed as one!

  27. Nowadays we feel all kinds of pains and discomforts here and there after reaching 40s. My husband complaints of backache all time even after typing some words on the typewrite or computer & need to paste plasters on his back. Glad that you are recovering from muscle strained. Take care!!

  28. Nick, my hubby has been thru similar pains like yours a couple of times. Sometimes, it was so bad that he could not even turn his head.

According to the doctor, it was STRESS. And the body's muscles have all tensed up. Thus, the dr had to inject some stuff to release the tension in the muscles so that they would get back to normal.

Not quite sure whether your prob is the same. But anyhow, do consult a dr asap!

  30. Blusher - Inject some stuff to release the tension? I feel faint just reading those words ... LOL!

Yeah, I heard stress can also be the culprit. Well, the good news is that the pain is almost gone, so that's a big relief :D
