Another One Of Them ...

It's actually been a wonderful weekend for me thus far. Well, until this morning actually. I wasn't intending to really post anything for today but I just couldn't help myself after reading todays newspaper. Another classic example of the limited mentality of our esteemed government officials ... siggghhh ...

I woke up feeling pretty good with myself today. I had a pretty good Saturday yesterday which I will post about tomorrow. A childhood dream came through for me yesterday and that made my whole day. And today was turning out to be a great day.

Both wifey and me slept in today, woke up and decided to head out for breakfast. We decided to try somewhere different and found a nice little cozy Chinese restaurant that was surprisingly not too packed and served pretty decent food, well, at least for the boys and me anyway.

Wifey was adventurous and decide to try something totally different than was she would normally eat and so she ordered this dish called Taiwanese beef noddles and it turned out to be horrible. According to her, it was the most tasteless noddle in the whole entire world if not universe and she wasn't too far off the mark cos I tried a little and it sure was extremely horrible.

But overall it was a pretty decent little restaurant which I would definitely recommend to all of you especially if you were living in Subang or USJ but unfortunately I can't remember the name of the shop ... hehehe ... Anyway back to the point of this post. While having my breakfast, I was going through the newspaper and read this article about something our learned (and I use the term very loosely here) said.

I quote a small portion of what he said:

'In view of the rising number of women contracting HIV, every woman should carry a condom with her for her own protection, said Deputy Health Minister Datuk Dr. Abdul Latiff Ahmad.

"this is not to debase them but to protect them. Women are the first ones to get exploited by their partners. But this is just a suggestion, it's up to them," he told the press after delivering his speech at the International AIDS Memorial Day here yesterday.'

Ok, that's fine and dandy with me. In this day and age you can't be too careful. I initially had no issues with the article. Well, not until I did a double take on the very first sentence he said. Why should the WOMEN be the ones that have to carry a condom with them? I once again shake my head in disbelief at such a ridiculous statement coming from a government official, a deputy health minister no doubt. Here we go again putting the responsibility on the women folk once more.

The article further went on to say that this is because there are some men who do not care to take precautions even though they know they have HIV. Yeah fine, so educate the men then that they should keep their lust in check instead of womanizing around. Educate the men that they should respect their partners in the first place instead of going around cheating on their loved ones. Educate the men that if they were going to cheat on their loved ones or even take drugs, that they should be the ones to carry a condom!

Why put the onus on the women? Why demean them by suggesting that they should be the ones carrying condoms instead of the men? So does that mean, the esteemed deputy health minister should be telling his wife or mother that she needs to carry a condom in her purse? (I mean no disrespect to his wife and mother at all, after all it was his suggestion anyway) Does that mean I need to go tell my wife that she needs to carry a condom in her purse too?

When I showed wifey the article she was raving mad with it. What kind of people do we have running the government she said. Why always target the women for everything? If they don't have anything intelligent to say, they should just keep their trap shut. She really was fuming that if the deputy health minister was in front of her, I'm sure she would have given him a nice black eye there and then ... LOL!

But she, being a woman has every right to be mad. I know the deputy health minister probably meant well (at least I hope he did, with our ministers you just can't be too certain) but he should keep his statements more generalized and not just targeted on one specific gender. In this country, it just seems that sometimes women are the root to all evil. Maybe we should just put all you women in concentration camps or something, then us 'men' wouldn't be tempted when you women (and don't forget the school girls) wear white blouses and maybe then you wouldn't have to be carrying condoms with you all the time.

I don't mean to be complaining a lot here but like I said, stupid people draw me in like a moth to a flame ... LOL! Anyways, besides that little small hiccup to my day, I don't have any other complains at all. It's been a beautiful weekend so far. Wifey and me are happily listing a few things that we want to get to refurbish our kitchen from IKEA next week such as a few wall mounted shelves, a new kitchen cabinet and some Quality Bar Stools cos our kitchen really needs a few new stuff. At least we've finally isolated and agreed on what we want so next week I'll be mounting a couple of new IKEA wall mounted shelves. Don't worry, I'll be posting some pictures too ... hehehe ...

  1. Couldn't agree with you and your wife more! Seriously.. Even if our health deputy minister meant well, just say EVERYONE who is active sexually, should bring a condom. THERE. No generalizing!

So is it the woman's fault that she contracted HIV from her no good husband because he was womanizing/manizing around and SHE didn't provide the condom?? Stupido!

Anyways, since I'm totally not going to spoil my "zen" for the weekend, I wish you all the best with your Ikea shopping expedition. LOL! Can't wait to see your newly refurbished kitchen! :)

  6. Shemah - Yes, he seriously could do with some tack in his speeches. Sometimes I seriously wonder how they actually came in the positions they have with thinking like that ... sighhhhhhhh ...

On a happier note, I'll definitely post pictures once I get everything up. Wifey and me having been planning for this for quite sometime and we've only now both agreed on exactly what we want ... hehehe ...

The only frightening thing is I'm going to install all the stuff myself. Hopefully I don't ruin anything ... LOL!

  7. KM - LOL! You'd have to stand in line behind my wife cos she is still fuming mad!

The problem with a lot of supposedly educated men (and some women) in power here is that they think women are the root to all problems!

I'm ashamed to be called a man sometimes with people like these around.

  15. When i read about it..I was like you wife, was soooo angry with the stupid remark made. Why women right? If the HIV carrier is a man, then it is HIS responsibilty to protect the woman he is been screwing around. Not the woman. Hell, what an idiot!

  16. Kadus Mama - This is something even I as a man cannot understand! But what can we expect with people like these in power ...

  18. Hi Nick, Do you know that many rape cases went unreported and many covered up by "someBODY". The person who said that probably is trying to help someBODY and women, in the wrong way. Sorry I may sound a bit out of the topic, excuse me!!

  21. Hi Nick,
My turn to get mad? I got this morbid thoughts in my head the moment I read this posting. Woman shud carry condoms in their bag to prevent HIV? So, does this mean that she shud offer it to rapist? Such stupid brainless people we have to 'guide' and 'lead' us in the government and they are wondering (STILL) why they lost so badly in the election?

  22. Marzie - LOL! Once in a while she does get adventurous unlike me who can stick to t he same food all the time :D

Not really a childhood dream la, but close to it ... hehehe ... Watch out for it in the next post :D

  23. Molly - A lot of things go unreported in this country. That's the way things work here. Either blame someone else or just plain hide the actual truth!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Jen - LOL! Yeah, they still cannot accept the real reason why they did so badly in the recent elections.

I suppose he meant well, but he phrased it very badly by specifically targeting the women to carry condoms with them ...

  25. Why should the WOMEN be the ones that have to carry a condom with them?

    AGREED

  26. Meleah - Yup, that's what I'd like to ask the esteemed deputy health minister myself!

  27. Politicians suck!
John Lennon once said that "Woman is the nigger of the world", and nothing has changed in the world.

  28. Cidao - LOL! Yeah, I've never heard of a decent politician in my entire life ...

  29. You know what Nick, I think it is high time that the government should give some public speaking trainings to their ministers. On top of that, there should be some kind awareness program specially formulated for them to tell them that they should not put the responsibilities and blames on the women alone when it comes to this kind of subjects. It just show how narrow minded and small tiny brains thy all have!! I'm so fuming mad not to mention embarrassed to hear some of the things the ministers said to the press...don't they think b4 thy speak!!???

    ReplyDelete
  30. Aunty J - I have to agree. Our ministers just speak without thinking whatsoever. They have no tact at all ... And trust me, even if people like these attend public speaking courses, they're still bound to say stupid stuff!
