You Have A New Text Message

According to a text message I had yesterday, I won a cool RM15,000. There I was minding my own business when I get a text message saying,

Congratulations! Nombor telepon anda telah b'jaya mendptkan hadiah utama, wang RM15,000 dari Power Root Sdn Bhd. Sila tel: 012-810 6237. Terima Kasih.

Loosely translated to English for my foreign blog buddies, it means,

Congratulations! Your phone number has won the grand prize of RM15,000 from Power Root Sdn Bhd. Please call tel: 012-810 6237. Thank you.

Gosh, I'm so happy to win the grand prize. Imagine the things I could buy with that kind of money. The places I could go. But then again, what has my cell phone number got to do with winning a grand prize and in some no existent contest that I never took part in.

Come on whomever you are, you don't really think I'm that gullible now? If it was so easy to win good money like that without even taking part in any contest, life would be swell, wouldn't it? I was actually laughing my head off when I got the message and even showed it to my boss.

But then I got down to thinking about it and the laughter turned to anger. Now how in heavens name did they even get my cell phone number. Obviously this message never came from Power Root Sdn Bhd (which is a reputable company) and obviously someone is out to scam some poor unsuspecting and gullible fool out there.

But how did this scammer even get my cell phone number to begin with. Worse still, wifey got the exact same message on her cell with the only difference being that she won the grand prize of RM10,000 and that girl was fuming that I won more scam money than her ... LOL! I have a nasty suspicion that both our cell numbers were sold by someone, and my suspicion is someone from the telco that I'm using cos her cell is registered under my account.

I suppose they could get my cell number from countless other avenues since I do work in the client servicing line and hand out my business card to countless people but not wifey's cell? She's very secretive with her cell number and only very few people have it. So I'm placing my bets that someone from the telco sold our numbers.

This isn't the first time I've received text messages like these. I've had all kinds of stuff sent to my phone ranging from 'banks' telling me something is wrong with my account and to text them my password, great promotional offers on breeches right up to activating my 'free' account to a world of naked women!

Come on already, we all know banks never ask for passwords through the phone and if I wanted to view pictures of naked women, why would I wanna view it on such a tiny little cell phone screen when I can use my huge flat screen monitor for a much better and bigger (LOL!) view? Ridiculous I tell you.

I suppose it must be pretty profitable selling these scammers people's cell phone numbers cos these cell phone scams just keep on getting more and more each passing day. And the worst thing is there really are a few gullible (or desperate) people out there who will fall for something like this.

I suppose these people get away with stuff like these cos no one actually bothers complaining to the proper authorities about these scams. I know I for one am going to send that text message to my telco and also Power Root Sdn Bhd themselves right after this post and make a complain about this. I don't know know if it'll amount to much but at least I did my best in taking steps to eradicate these swines!

I wonder what my next text message will be? Maybe I'd win an all expense paid vacation for a month with Jennifer Garner? LOL! Dream on, Nicky boy, dream on!

  11. I've never received scam txt messages but back when I was still in Penang, I get a lot of scam calls on my house number. They are usually chinese ladies (ladies from china) and they speak mandarin. What I always do is pretend I don't understand chinese and started asking WH questions in english and she would hurriedly hang up the phone. It's so funny!
