The Shy Boy!

A couple of days or was it weeks ago, Syura of Petty Ramblings of a Petty Queen wrote a posting called 'seriously, what do you want?' which was about stalkers. You know the kind, those that just visit your blog daily, you'd see their avatars on your sidebar widgets everyday but not a single peep from them in your comment box.

What she replied to my comments was what got me writing this post. In her reply to my comment there was this line which she wrote:

'Gosh, I'm asking you of all people. You memang tak pandai malu type, right? (Loosely translated means, you have no shame or you're not the shy type). LOL!! Okay, go stalk now...'

And I just had to laugh hysterically at the comment. I'm actually the exact opposite of that statement ... hehehe ... I wonder if that's the impression I give on my blog with the way I write, that I have no shame ... LOL! To be really honest, I'm seriously a very shy person in real life.

'Then what the hell are you doing working in the client servicing department if you're shy?'

That is a good question. I think I wrote a post on this some time back called 'A Thankless Industry' way back in September. I've always been a shy person by nature. Back when I was a kid, I'd hardly open my mouth and speak to anyone I didn't know. Not because I was intimidated or scared of them but because I was just plain shy and didn't know what to say to them.

I wasn't just that way with strangers. Even when my relatives came over to visit us on occasions, I'd always hide out behind the tables, showcases or whatever I could hide behind! Of course I don't do that now la, I just hideaway in my room ... LOL! I have to really be familiar with that person before I was comfortable enough to get out of my shell.

Even when it came to the girls, it was the same. I went to school with a school bus back in my younger days. And I was so shy that if I went up the bus and the only available seat left was with a girl, I'd rather stand than sit with her! I also couldn't maintain eye contact with people whenever I spoke with them. I'd stammer if I was forced to talk with anyone! And if I wasn't on the tanned side, you'd even see me turn beet red. I never mixed around much because of this. I was more of a loner, which contributed even more to my shy outlook.

And I know, judging by how crazy and insane I can be here on my blog, you guys would probably find it real hard to believe I am the shy sort of person but I still really am. It's just nowadays, I try my best to put that shyness behind and be a little bolder in my outlook in life. This blog gives me a chance to hide that shyness I have cos I'm not afraid to speak my mind here about anything at all. Besides when I'm blogging I don't have to look you guys in the eye (LOL).

Even right up to this very moment, whenever I go for any appointments, my heart would be beating to the tune of 300 to 400 beats a minute fearing the prospect of having to meet some unknown stranger for a presentation or a meeting and having to express myself and to sell some idea or concept to them. But I steel myself up and just get on with it. It's my job and it's what pays the bills. But if you could see inside me at times like these, you'd probably see me trembling in shyness, not to mention fear ... LOL! I'd be so glad when it was all over that I could just faint from relief!

That's why I found Syura's comments about me not being the shy type pretty hilarious. Is that the impression I give you guys about my character in real life? Gosh, if you guys only knew me in person, you'd really know how shy I can be. But once you really get to know me and I get familiar with you, you'd probably wish I'd revert back to being the shy guy I claim I am and would just shut the hell up ... LOL! Trust me, my two good buddies have been wishing for that ever since they got to know me a lot better ... LOL!

  1. you know being shy and struggling is what we mostly do because the circumstances make us do so. Nobody of people around me would ever say that i am an introvert because i am always open to the people and not "shy" :D But in the end we know about ourselves better though trying to fit into the social environment.

  2. aisehman! Shy shy cat like that! LOL!

Honestly, from your postings, you definitely don't seem THAT shy at all.. If I were to describe your personality based on your posts, I would say, outgoing, funny and talkative (i mean what other blogger could write long posts that people read from start till the end?). Only talkative people can do that.

    Well, that's my opinion laa..

So, if we were to have a Bloggers Meet, I'll make sure to find you hiding behind the bar or under the table?? LOL!

  3. Gotta love stalkers. They know lots about us, and when they finally make their move in real life, we're left fearing for our lives. Not because they're threatening us with violence (I hope), but because they know way too much about us while we know nothing about them. The unfair balance gives them a tactical advantage, but it's often their own undoing.

That said, the rest of us shy people (myself included) tend to have no problem being the exact opposite online. The internet brings out the extrovert in all of us :)

    Keep on bloggin', Nick.

  4. I can't tell you're the shy type from your blog. I guess blogging opens up a whole new world of communication for shy people. I'm sure you're not that shy anymore since you're in a/c servicing.

I was thrown into a/c servicing when I started my design firm years back. I wasn't that shy but I was very sensitive. I had a client who was very stern and straight forward. He chided me one time and I started crying when I walked out of his office!

  5. OMG Nick.. Are we Piscean alike?? I am the exact like you. I am basically a shy person (sometimes even appear snobby) although my hubby would never believe it. I still hate public speaking and I think my voice would even turn into this croaking sound that even I would not recognized.

But over the years, I acknowledged my weakness and know that it would not get me anyway and hence this big change, the ever talkative LJ that cant shut up...heheh... but deep down only me and only me knows what I am.. I guess you feel the same??

  6. Hey shy boy, you can take the paper bag off your head now! It’s only us you’re talking to!
Seriously though, you would never guess it from your posts. You seem pretty comfortable in chatting away to us, and the posts are always lively and interesting to read.
Not bad for a shy guy!

  8. LOL! So you see Nick! I'm not the only one who thinks you're not shy cuz your posts sure don't seem like you are. That goes for your comments as well.

Well, I'm glad blogging has made you more of an exciting person to be around. Just remember to be this way if we ever do have a bloggers' gathering! :D

  10. Just a nice girl - yes, you're right that the circumstances do shape what we become eventually. I'm a very reserved person by nature though.

  11. Shemah, you got the talkative part absolutely right ... LOL! Once I'm comfortable with someone I can't stop talking, ask my wife, the poor girl suffers through my non stop chatter at home ... LOL!

Oh, I'll be the one with bag on my head during the bloggers meet ... hahaha ...

  12. Jason - hey buddy, haven't seen you here in a while :)

You're right I guess. The internet can often times make someone a different person altogether!

Oh, don't worry Jason, I intend to keep on blogging till I'm old and grey ... LOL!

  13. BT - you can't imagine the amount of times I've been chided by my clients! At first I took it very personally, sulked for days even but after a while, you tend to not be too bothered about what they say ... LOL!

Yeah, blogging does give those shy people like me an outlet to express myself ... LOL!

  14. LJ - you're a Piscean too? I guess it's a common trait for Pisceans. Oh, I've been called snobbish many a times too ... LOL!

I don't consider shyness a weakness, I'd say it was more of a character trait. Shyness does have it advantages at times you know. people don't ask you to do things as much ... LOL!

  15. The world according to me - No! No! That bag's not coming off! LOL!

I am comfortable here in my blog but I don't know how I'd be when confronted face to face. You'd probably not hear a squeak from me at all ... LOL!

  16. Sweetiepie - you mean they actually have a video of that debacle? OMG, I've got to get my hands on it and dispose of the evidence!

How could you even think of taking advantage of this poor shy boy ... LOL! But seriously though, I was trembling throughout that speech, good thing the lights weren't too bright :D

  17. Syura - I guess you're right cos nobody believes I'm this shy little (urrmm, maybe not so little la ... LOL) boy ... hehehe ...

Well, blogging has definitely done something for me but don't know about the turning into an exciting person part though ... LOL!

Oh, and like I told Shemah, I'll be the one with the bag on my head ... LOL!

  18. Ethel - LOL! Yeah, I'm sure lots of you wouldn't be able to guess from the way I am on my blog.

You should see me in real life. I'm so shy, you'd think I was snobbish! LOL!

  20. Isn't it cool that we feel safe to share a little more of ourselves here on our blogs that we do in everyday real life? I never would have taken you for the shy type either! :-) I am so much more comfortable "talking" to people in writing, than I am in meeting new folks in person. Like you, I tough it out and do it, but this is sooo much easier, and more fun!

  21. Melinda - I am still like that! LOL! Welcome to my blog by the way. Hope to see you around more often.
