The Taxi Man

I'm performing the duties of a taxi driver for the next couple of days and I'm not liking it one bit cos part of that duties would involve me waking earlier than normal in the mornings. And I'm really not a very good morning person. My mind has already been set to wake up at a certain time everyday and if I have to in any way adjust that timing, I'll be a grouch the whole day, so expect to see some grouchy postings from me the next couple of days ... LOL!

Well, the truth of the matter is my cousin who lives just across the road from my place has gone away for an overseas trip with her husband leaving her kids, two boys and a little girl with her mom to look after while they're away. My mom has also gone over to help look after the little brats (and they are little brats, mind you) and will be there until Sunday.

They're all school going children, the two boys are in primary school and the girl in pre-school. Now, while the boys are happy to cut class cos there's no one to send them to school, the little girl insists on attending her pre-school classes and would scream her lungs out if she was not taken to school. She needs her head checked cos just like her brothers I would gladly savour the opportunity to miss school anytime ... hehehe ...

But anyways, since she insist on going to school, I've been assigned as the designated taxi driver to fetch her in the mornings and pick her up in the afternoons. Now, while picking her up in the afternoon isn't really too much of a problem cos I send my younger boy to school around the same time as she finishes but it's the sending her to school in the morning part which is the problem.

She needs to be at school by 7.30am (what an ungodly hour of the morning) and that means, that even though she lives about a 5 minute drive away, I need to wake up at 6.30 am (an even ungodlier hour) and get myself ready and then head out just to fetch her and send her to pre-school before I head to work. And I would have to pass one horribly traffic congested area just to send her to her school which is really just about 5 minutes away from my place. Unfortunately the place I live in is synonymous for it's early morning traffic jams.

What would normally take me 5 minutes is probably going to take me half an hour and I get pissed when I get stuck in jams, ask wifey, she knows how I 'membebel' (complain) when I'm stuck in jams! And the fact that I have to get up at 6.30 in the a.m isn't going to improve my early morning grouchiness one bit! Like I said, I'm not a morning person.

I have problems waking up and I'll always try and squeeze in a few extra minutes of sleep every morning. Wifey normally gets up at 6.20 or 6.30 am to prepare breakfast and clean up the place while I'll be snoozing till at least around 7.30 am. I work so close by and I don't have to face any traffic jams on the way to work that I don't really need to wake up early.

Once wifey is done with her chores downstairs, she'll come up to wake me and I'll always tell her to give me another 5 minutes ... hehehe ... I've been like this ever since I was a little boy. I've always enjoyed sleeping but waking up was always so difficult for me. My grandmother had to wake me up at least 4-5 times before I would finally grudgingly get up and start to get ready for school.

Back then I had to get up at 6.00 am to prepare for school cos I lived quite a distance from the school and the school bus would come quite early. Grandma would rouse us all up from our slumber by 5.45 am and I'd push it till at least 6 am. And once I wake up, I'd rush to get washed and dressed so I would have some time to catch a couple more minutes of sleep in the porch while waiting for the school bus to come.

There have been occasions when the bus arrived and I'd be snoring away and my cousins would be trying their best to wake me up ... LOL! And once they finally get me on the bus, I'd find a nice little quiet seat at the back and continue my snoozing and the whole routine would start all over again when the bus reached the school. I wonder why they couldn't just let me sleep and let the bus driver send me home!

I've always loved my sleep and could sleep all day if given the chance. Even wifey complains that I sometimes sleep way too much ... hehehe ... Normally during weekends I'll tell her that I'm going to take a 'short' nap and will be up in a hour or so and the next thing you know, I would have napped for close to 4 hours sometimes that by the time I'm awake, it would be time for dinner ... hehehe ... She now gives me this 'uh-huh' look everytime I say I'm going to take a short nap :D

And I can fall asleep anywhere and on any surface. I know of people who can only sleep in their own bed and can't sleep anywhere else. But not me. I can sleep under my office table if I have to (and I have before, but that's a story for another post). It doesn't matter where I am, just give me a nice quite place and I'm out of it. I just love sleeping.

Well, since I'm going to have to wake up early the next couple of days, I'd best find some extra time to replace the sleeping time I'm going to lose. Hey, this is a serious matter for me, ok? LOL! Have to find ways to make up for loss of sleeping time, ok? You don't want me to be a grouch the whole week now do you. It's not a very nice sight. Ask wifey, the poor girl has gone through so many of my grouching sessions to know how unpleasant it can be ... hehehe ...

And I hope my cousins appreciates my taxi driver duties for the next few days and a good way for her to show her appreciation to me would be to get me something really nice when she gets back from overseas, nothing fancy, something simple, something small but really EXPENSIVE! LOL!

  3. Waking up earlier in the morning to drive....yikes!

Though I'm a morning person, I'm against chores that requires me to sacrifice my sleep except if there's a holiday trip scheduled....

  18. Tammy - It does, the work day should really start at 11am or something so people don't have to wake up so early ... hehehe ...

  23. HAHHAHAHAHAHHAHA I wish I could enjoy my sleep as well as you do nick. Unfortunately I'm a very light sleeper, my mum used to wake us up when I was younger, oh gawd, her voice damn nyaring, 1 kali sudah terbangun. And I only sleep at home or when there's a comfie bed, I can't sleep with noise. Yes, that's how terrible it is. I could wake up 3am becoz my body clock is screwed XD

  24. Oh, I wish I could sleep like you. I used to sleep alot when I was young too but these days, even my naps are really short like 15 minutes. I can't even sleep longer no matter how I try.

Oh, you finally get a taste of being a taxi driver. I have been at it for years and it's sickening if you get stuck in a jam so early in the morning. Luckily only the little girl needs a ride (still, she needs to get her head checked!). Imagine her brothers too! Oh well, the week's almost over. Hang in there.

  35. You and I are so much alike it's scaryt. I love my bed and take any opportunity I can to have a nap especially when the weather is wet and cold. Is there anything better than snuggling up under the blankets and drifting off to dreamland?

I moved within 6km of my job once and thought that I would always get to work early after previously living an hour's drive away. Did I? Nope...I just slept in an hour longer...LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Gypsy - LOL! Sleep tends to do that to one. I think it's a Pisces thing!

But there really is nothing like a good snooze on a lazy afternoon :D

    ReplyDelete
  37. Wow! Very hard to find me awake at 6.30am unless I have not slept yet and am still up at that ungodly hour! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Marzie - LOL! Why am I not surprised. You guys always pull the graveyard shift that I think you only get to bed at 6.30am ... hehehe ...
