The Lemon

A couple of days ago, the family and me had dinner at one of the malls. There are times when wifey and me are just too lazy to cook at home and the boys sometimes complain they get fed up of eating home cooked food everyday.

When that happens we'll head to one of the nearby malls. Now this time when it came to drinks I decided to order something cheap seeing as how I'm always telling everyone to order cheap drinks and I'll end up ordering the most expensive drink of the lot.

So I ordered fresh lime juice seeing as how I love drinks with a tinge of sourness in it. Well, even though I tried my best to order a cheap drink it turned out to be the most expensive again ... LOL!

Anyway when the drink arrived, it was the worst tasting lime juice around. It was so bland that I could hardly taste the lime at all. Me being me started complaining to wifey about how lousy the drink was and that I could make a much better lime juice than this. Ok, now before I go further let me tell you I've never made lime juice in my entire life!

So, after dinner, I dragged wifey to the supermarket section and bought some lime to take home and try making my own lime juice to prove that I could make a much better one. Upon reaching home, I couldn't wait till the next day to prove my theory right.

I took some lime, cut them up, then took a jug and started squeezing, or at least tried to, the lime. After much pressing and squeezing, I managed to get some lime juice along with a ton of seeds into the jug and all over the table, floor and my t-shirt. Next I put in some cold water and mixed the whole concoction together.

Now, all this while wifey was standing a few feet away with this smirk on her face and watching the mess I created. I could tell she was trying hard not to laugh. So after mixing everything, I proudly poured a mug full and handed one to wifey who shook her head and refused my offering. She asked me to try it first and then she will.

Ok, I smugly said. You're going to be smacking your lips at how tasty my lime juice is going to be. And then I took sip of it and you should have seen the look on my face. The darn thing was so sour that I think my face looked like a prune. Wifey was laughing away hysterically and I was left wondering where the heck did I go wrong.

That was when she told me that sugar is an important ingredient when it comes to making lime juice! Geez, how the heck was I supposed to know that. I've never made lime juice in my entire life. So much for trying to prove that I can make a better lime juice than the shops do. On top of that I had to clean up the total mess I made in the kitchen cos wifey said I ain't leaving her kitchen until I clean up the mess I made.

I should just stick to advertising and leave the food and beverage business to the experts. Next time I'll just order Coke or Pepsi. At least I won't have any reason to complain that they taste horrid and then try to prove I can make a better Coke or Pepsi ... LOL!

Which is why I'm glad to accept this Lemonade award from Monica. Since I can make lime juice even if my life depended upon it, I can atleast accept Lemonade awards, right? LOL! Actually I have no idea what a Lemonade award is but thank you Monica for passing this award my way.

I'm supposed to nominate at least 10 blogs that show great attitude and/or gratitude and that's close to impossible cos you all have such great blogs with great attitude and/or gratitude that it would be hard to just pick ten. So I'm going to be selfish and keep this award for myself ... LOL!

  1. Ya man, our lime juice comes with sugar to maintain the sourness. :-)

Interesting experiment, hmmm, perhaps I should try concocting beer! :-)

  2. Somehow I try not to order drinks outside as I feel they are overpriced! I prefer to use the money to buy more food! Haha! And you definitely save money if you make your own drinks at home.

  6. Gallivanter - Weird isn't it? I would have thought the darn sugar made it sweeter instead of sour ... but hey what do I know ... LOL!

  7. Foongpc - They are overpriced and taste lousy at times. But I think I'll stay away from trying to make my own drinks seeing as how wifey almost banned me from her kitchen for making a mess ... LOL!

  12. Hi Nick,
I love a glass a refreshing lime juice too and usually, I will ask to hold the sugar and add some salt instead. If I make this at home, then I will make a combination of lemon, lime and limau kasturi (dunno the English name for this). Anyway, mix those and some salt or sugar and add cold water...very refreshing ^_^.

p/s: try using the strainer when you squeeze the juice next time so that you dont up having seeds all over the place and in the drink! haha

  19. I think my brother makes the best lime juice ever! He loves sour things and ever since he was young he's been concocting the right taste and he's perfected it already. So whenever I want my lime juice (Shakalaka - as he calls it) I'll just pujuk him to do it for me! LOL!

btw, it was a good attempt to prove your point.. at least you learned something new, right?

  20. Shemah - I'm still trying to perfect mine. It's getting there slowly but steadily. At least now I know that sugar is an important ingredient in making lime juice ... LOL!
