Motivation, Where Forth Are Thou?

I wouldn't generally call myself a very lazy person. I mean I do have my lazy streaks in me and all that but I don't fear hard work. But of late, that lazy streak has materialized ten fold when it comes to working out. I love running. Those of you who've been reading my blog for quite sometime would know that I love running. I think I've even posted about my love for running quite a while back.

But lately, no, let me rephrase that. For quite a long while now, I've totally neglected my running. And it's all due to my laziness or rather my total lack of motivation for running. Everyday I tell myself that the moment I get home from work, I'll put on my dusty (and I really mean dusty) pair of running shoes and go for my run. But then the moment I reach home, I'll have some sort of stupid excuse for not running.

Even wifey is I think by now fed-up of my excuses for not running. Every ounce of my body feels like running but the will and desire to run just isn't there. I would put it all down to me being plain lazy. I've gone through this phase before where I stopped running for close to a whole year, then one fine day, I put on my shoes and started running fanatically again to the point of actually getting myself fit enough to go for a 10k race.

And just when I'm all fit and used to running again, the lazy bug will just creep in. It'll start with a simple excuse like, 'I'm not running today cos I need to rest my legs'. Then it'll be, 'the weather is just too hot to run'. Next it'll be, 'it looks like rain out there'. Or even, 'it's not safe to run, I might get kidnapped by aliens'. You get my drift, ya? It's all just one excuse after another.

Throughout my life, I was never a very sporty type of person. Yeah, I played football and all that but if given the choice I would have rather stayed home and slept. But there are only two real sports that I've been very passionate and fanatical about. One is running and the other was martial arts. The martial arts part I gave up a long time ago but running is still a part of me. Well, not for a while though.

I'm trying to find that spark that I need to get out there and run like before. Maybe it's cos of the lack of a running partner. I use to run with one of my best buddies a long time back. We were both (and I think he still is) fanatical about running. He used to live just a block away from me and we'd force ourselves to get up at 5.00am every morning and run for at least 9 kilometres almost every day and we both kept on pushing each other.

And it worked. When either one of us lacked motivation to run, the other would be there to build it up again. The thing is through time, work and family life got in the way and it got harder and harder for us to meet up to run. We both had odd working hours and sometimes we worked late into the early mornings and getting up at 5am was proving to be extremely difficult.

These days wifey tries to motivate me as best as she can and as much as I would love for her to run alongside me, she's not into the kind of running I do. She's more of the leisurely run kind of person. I'm more of the competitive running kind of person. But I seriously need to get out there and running again. I'm at a level where I'm completely unhealthy right now and that is not a good sign.

I even started on some indoor exercises a couple of days ago to try to motivate myself again. Well, it was for a whole 10 minutes, but at least it was way more than I've been doing the past god knows how long. I need a proper workout program but most of all what I really need is my motivation back! In my mind the need to run is there, but in my heart the desire is pretty clouded up at the moment. Any ideas on how I can find that motivation and desire again?

  1. Haaha..I used to be really lazy too...everytime there's an opportunity to exercise, there'll be plenty of excuses...

Know what I did? Sign up for gym membership......with having to fork out fees every month, die die also have to go at least 3 times a week.... :P

  2. Nick, when you get that answer, share it with me too, because I can't seem to re-ignite my workout regime that I stopped almost 2 years ago.

  3. Get a dog and take your dog out for a run. They make excellent running buddies as it's either you keep up with them or risk being dragged while you hanging onto the leash :)

  4. That was a great idea by Perky. If you had to walk the dog anyway it would force you to go.

I hate that feeling of apathy and lethargy. You know that if you can only push yourself that one little step you'll be fine. You even know when you do you'll enjoy it but it's just pushing through that barrier to take the first step.

Get a dog! A big one that needs lots of exercise :)

  5. I get my exercise from chasing kids around all day. LOL

  6. Nick, running has never been one of my biggest favourites either.... I'd rather sleep than have to go out and run.

    :)

In my old age..... *smirk* *smirk* I've realized I am such a lazy person.

  7. Go! Go! Run for your life, Nick. Ok, that mustn't be a good motivation. How about if you think you would like to have a body build-up that of Daniel Craig and have him as inspiration to run, lol! I'm not good at this one cos I would prefer to laze and sleep than running.

  9. Hey me too! I have completely stopped since the last race and feel no desire to put on my running shoes. I am happy scrubbing laundry as my new workout but who am I kidding? Aiya, lazy lah...

Oh and I was chased by a group ( do you call them a group?) of dogs once and you should have seen me run. Even the Flash would have lost out la .. LOL!

  28. Please pass any motivation running ideas onto me! I need to stop eating cheese and start putting my trainers on. I keep making excuses too. There seems to be a million things I need to do before I head to the gym. But Christmas food is around the corner and I will be the size of Africa if I don't start exercising again soon...

    Sorry, I wasn't much help was I!

  29. I am SUPER lazy.

And there is no way I can / will work out!

Its been YEARS since Ive done any sort of exercise, and now that its getting colder, rainier, and windy around these parts walking or running is just not an option for me!

  30. No exercise = Fat Nick.

    How's that for motivation? ;)

  31. Sweet-Girlicious - Getting a bulldog to chase me is probably the only way I'm going to put on my shoes and run again ... LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Carol - LOL! Once you hang up your shoes you're done for cos we'll be making up excuses not to run :D

Oh I agree, nap time is of the utmost importance ... hehehe ...

  33. Osindak - Hey, it's been a while since I've seen you here.

I guess we're pampered with so much convenience these days that exercising takes a back seat.

    ReplyDelete
  34. The World According To Me - Oh Christmas! As much as I love the season, I'm probably going to give you a run for you money with trying to be the size of Africa ... LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Meleah - I wish it would get colder, rainier and windy here, then at least I'll have a justifiable reason for not working out ... LOL!

  36. Samalah we... I haven't been out running since my schedule has gone crazy and I really miss it. I can squeeze it in if I truly want, but no motivation also.

I think the only way for us to get back on the running track is to just do it. Paksa only! And then once the flow is there everything should fall into place.

I'm planning to start on Monday again. Come we together-gether? Hehehehe

    ReplyDelete
  37. Rozella - Yup, that is so true, once you take that first step, then the rest should easily fall in place :D

Good for you! Get out there and run, as for me, well we'll see ... LOL!

  38. I must confess I'm a lazy guy! I hate exercises of any kind...
