Cheap Is Not Always Good!

Before I go to bed, I'd like to pen a few words about unscrupulous mechanics. In my previous post I mentioned that my car had to go to the shop for some repairs today and after getting to the root of the problem which cost me some pretty good money amounting to RM180.00, it was discovered that a service job I did last week or so at another mechanic was the whole culprit!

Last Sunday, while we were on the way out shopping for some weight loss pills (ok, maybe not really weight loss pills ... hehehe) I passed by this mechanic in Shah Alam and they had a sign outside their shop for some pretty cheap service job. It was so cheap that I immediately decided to get the car serviced since I was way overdue for one anyway.

Now, while getting the car serviced, I should have suspected something amiss when the mechanic attending to my car casually stated that he doesn't know how his boss can give such cheap service jobs when the engine oil alone costs more than the price of the servicing.

Ok, that got me a little suspicious about the whole thing but everything looked fine to me. The engine oil looked new and wasn't any recycled kind (not that I could tell anyway) and the oil filter also came out from a new packaging. So I didn't really think too much about it. I mean, maybe the guy bought his stuff in bulk and was doing charity work by offering cheap servicing jobs.

Well, after the servicing, the car felt fine for a few days and then it started acting up. It was constantly choking and stalling and I decided to take it to my regular mechanic and get it tuned up, which was what I thought the problem was.

But when I went to pick my car up, my mechanic said that I shouldn't have taken the cheap offer cos the engine oil he used clogged up my engine and was the main culprit for the whole problem.

So he had to re-service my car, flush the engine, change the oil filter and a few more other things just to clear up some unscrupulous mechanics work. Not to mention a big waste of money! My regular mechanic is one of the most honest mechanics around but he's also not the cheapest which is why I don't always send my car to him.

But I've learned my lesson, pay a little bit more is better to going to some cheap no good workshop and getting fleeced. I'm going to go over there tomorrow, take picture of the work shop and post it here so you guys can stay away from that place! I'm always up to exposing cheats!

At least the car is running fine again. In fact I think it's running even better than I've heard it in a long time. I guess from today, I'll be sending my car to this mechanic I can trust. It might cost me a little more than other shops, but at least he's good at what he does and most importantly he's a trustworthy mechanic. This is one mechanic I would gladly recommend to everyone!

  10. Oh dear. I can't believe he had the heart to do something like that! You really should stick to the honest mechanic from now on. I just sent my car in for servicing. I know it's going to cost me an arm and a leg this time. Sigh.

  11. Actually, cheap is OK, depending on trust. This dude could've given you a really crap service, so he makes double and then later tell u to go expensive....

  13. When it comes to my car, yeah..I dont mind paying more rather than to have experience being stranded in a God-knows-where kind of place just because I use non-quality stuff for the car and it backfired me. :)

  14. Penny wise, pound foolish.. my late grandma would say to me. You think you're being wise by going cheap and then you end up having to pay loads more in the end.

I think we've all been through that kind of scenario before and that's how we learn our lessons in life, ya? Hang in there. The year is almost over. :)

  21. It must have been planned by that cheap mechanic to use "dirty" engine oil so that the customers would come back again and again. And profits begin despite the cheap service, lol!

  22. Emelda - Very painful la! But then come to think of it, it also boils down to my own stupidity too.

  36. I think you're right to go with the guy you can trust. There are a lot of unscrupulous mechanics out there who rip people off, especially women unfortunately because they think they won't know the difference.

Btw Nick...I tried 3 times to leave a comment on the post below and every time I went to publish it I got kicked off. It may be my computer but just thought I would let you know. Assuming the same thing doesn't happen with this comment of course.

  37. Romany Angel - I know I've learned my lesson so it'll be with the mechanic I trust from now on. It was a really expensive lesson though.

Really? All your comments seem to have come through just fine. Hope it's nothing serious but my blog seems to have been acting up recently ...
