New Found Passion

I'm on a diet! Yes again, for the umpteenth time! It's a never ending struggle between me and my quest for losing weight. Seeing as how my running days are not as consistent as they used to be, with me running for two or three days and then laying off for a week. At that rate I'm never going to achieve my goal of having a hunky body (like as if that will ever happen! LOL!). So cutting back on my food and eating a much healthier diet looked like the only way to go.

On the serious side I was getting totally unfit. Doing simple stuff took twice the energy it required from me and I'm only 42 years young! People twice my age started looking so much more healthier and lots more energetic than me. That was when I said enough is enough and I started weaning off from rice which was really the biggest contributor to my ever expanding waist line. I'm a rice eating person and I eat lots of it. Trust me, sometimes the amount of rice I eat even shocks wifey.

So for the past nine days I've managed not to touch a single grain of rice and have started to eat a lot less (a lot less for me is normal portions for everyone else). I started to experiment and cook my own food so I could control the stuff I put in it, you know, less oil, less ajinomoto seasoning and the likes.

But then, eating healthy food is not cheap. The price of the stuff I would need to prepare a more healthy diet is definitely more expensive than buying your normal everyday food. But there was this statement I heard while watching 'The Biggest Loser Asia' where one of the contestant said the same thing about healthy food being expensive. And the trainer replied that yes, healthy food is expensive but a hospital bill is even more astronomical!

That statement kinda hit home so both wifey and me decided to not bother about how much food cost and buy more healthy stuff. And with that my new passion as a wannabe chef started. Three or so days ago, after watching a Gordon Ramsay cooking show, I decided to experiment and whip up this dish I saw him make. It didn't look too hard and it was healthy as sin :D

I told wifey I was going to cook up something special and she was really kinda skeptical (when it comes to me cooking, she's always wary ... LOL!) especially since I didn't use any recipe textbooks, everything was done out of instinct alone.

I'm not going to go into details, you can read all about it on my spaceman blog (there's even a picture of my masterpiece there ... hahaha!) but suffice to say, she was pleasantly surprised with the dish I cooked up. She even loved it and gave me two thumbs up. She said it was better than what Gordon Ramsay made ... ok, ok, she didn't really say that la ... LOL!

She's quite supportive of my new found passion and lets me mess up her kitchen to prepare more of these kinds of meals. In fact, she liked what I cook that she let me whip up a new dish for lunch today.

While out shopping this morning, we bought some beef and I made grilled beef (marinated with Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce) with seared onions, garlic and tomatoes topped with Alfredo Portobello sauce for me and for wifey, I made grilled beef with stir-fried Shitaake mushrooms with Alfredo Portobello sauce (she's not too fond of tomatoes and onions) and I must say that it tasted heavenly.

It may not look like much but here's how it turned out just before we both swallowed it down ... urrmmm .. don't mind the Pizza Hut plates ... LOL! And don't even bother asking me how I got them ... hahaha!

I'm actually kinda enjoying this new found cooking passion I've developed so much so that I've already prepped and marinated some chicken breast for dinner tonight that will be grilled and accompanied by cheese and broccoli pasta together with some thick creamy mushroom soup. Hopefully it'll turn out well. If I don't look anywhere close to Clive Owen in two months' time, I'm going back to eating rice! Hahaha!

  6. Marzie - the second pix is wifey's portion. It's actually the same sauce but hers is mixed with shitaake mushroom hence the more brownish colour.

  21. Buddy! Gald to see that you've really been bitten by the cooking bug. After all those years of ridicuing me and Seansy's it's nice to see that you've hit the kitchen with a passion.

I can see that you're cooking up a storm and the food looks good too...I've used the Portabelo too before and it's good...You can also try campbell's mushroom soup too for a sauce...sith some sauteed onions and garlic...good too. Another thing you can do is use the beef drippings and make a nice brown sauce...man now I'm getting hungry too.
