Not What It Used To Be

The long Chinese New Year (CNY) break is almost over. Most places were closed for nearly a week and the crowd is expected back in droves over the weekend. One thing I really like about the long CNY break is the traffic or rather lack of traffic on the roads.

It's really one of the best times to drive around the capital hassle free. I did take a drive into the heart of town on purpose just to enjoy the traffic-less situation but surprisingly the traffic was heavier than I thought it would be.

I guess not many people go back to their hometowns for the CNY celebrations these days. I remember back in my younger days, whenever the Chinese New Year comes along, the town would practically be a dead town for the entire week with all the shops and businesses being closed.

There would be hardly any cars on the road and we even managed to go and lie flat on the federal highway in the middle of the afternoon and live to tell the tale :D If we tried that today, we'd be flattened in no time! Back then, when things closed down for the CNY break, it REALLY closed down.

Trying to even find a place that was open just to eat would be like finding a needle in a haystack. I use to hangout with my buddies during the entire CNY break back then and we would always have to resort to going to 7-11 and buying canned stuff or instant noodles to eat cos there really wasn't a single shop that would be open.

And we would welcome the day when the celebrations were over and things got back to normal cos we'd get to eat our favourite foods again. But that was all in the past. These days there would always be some shops that would be open though they would charge a little higher than normal.

In fact I think they're still charging even higher than normal cos this afternoon wifey and me went out for some business dealings and had lunch at this Chinese restaurant and the food was a lot more pricey than normal. I don't think we'll be eating at that shop anymore!

I actually wanted to write this post about this wrinkle cream that I saw today but am too tired to type out one of my usual long winded postings. Being your own boss does tend to make you work even harder cos now I cannot afford to slip up since it's my own company now :D

I'm going to call it an early night so you guys have a great weekend now you hear.

  1. I enjoyed driving around PJ and KL during CNY! So glad most people balik kampong, haha! I guess not everybody balik kampong nowadays that's why still a little jammed in certain places, but it's still miles better than normal days! : )

  3. Back then, we all go back to the kampong. Nowadays, the kampong come to the city actually.

Like in my case, all my siblings are working and permanently residing in Klang Valley with only one sibling left in my hometown. So instead of all of us going back, the other one comes to the city.

Many elders have also migrated to Klang Valley to join their children who have raised a family here. So these people do not need to go back to their hometown anymore.

Businesses are also the wiser nowadays. With more people staying back in the Klang Valley would only means opportunities to rake in more profits. CNY is for 15 days, they can still close for the celebration once the holidays are over.

  8. Wenny - You have a point there. More people come in than go out these days, which explains the high number of traffic in town.

Eating out during the CNY holidays can be bad for your wallet especially if you eat in a Chinese restaurant.

It's great to have a short holiday. Thanks to the Chinese. Well I missed the Chinese because I love their food. A few days after CNY, i had difficulties in eating outside. HEhehe
