Something New Every Day

I've been a little busy in the office what with trying to get the hang of the new inkjet printing machine that arrived on Wednesday. Even though the suppliers of the machine were going to give us a training session for the machine today, I still went in yesterday to get the hang of the machine.

It's not really that difficult to master the machine seeing as how it's just a newer and updated model than our current machine but I still wanted to be around for the training today. The training was basically for my production people but I'm always the kind who wants to get hands on with everything in the office. Besides the boss must always know a little more than his workers so they can't bullshit him later in life ... LOL!

You never know, one day this batch of production people would leave for a better paying job or something and if I didn't know how to work the machines myself when that happened, we'd be in deep shit. I've always been one to want to learn things for myself. I don't at all mind getting down and dirty doing my own production work cos my policy in the office is, I won't ask you to do something I myself will not or cannot do.

That whole policy is based on a previous experience from one of my former working places when I was heading a small design team, donkeys years ago. At that time, I really didn't bother to want to learn anything that didn't involve my job scope. I was content to let my underlings ... urrrmmm ... my design team (LOL!) do the work for me.

But one day, I gave them something that couldn't be done and insisted that it could be done and for them to keep on trying. But after countless attempts, they gave up and came to me and me being the cocky person I was back then insisted that it could be done.

They got fed up with me and dumped everything at my feet and told me to show them how to do it. I was left stunned and totally embarrassed cos I myself had no idea how to do it. That was a lesson well learned. From that day onwards, I made it a point to learn everything I could in my industry so this would never happen to me again.

I've been in this industry for slightly more than 20 over years and I could say I've seen it and heard it all but that is almost always never the case. There is always something new to learn each day and I make it a point to learn it. I don't ever want that incident above to happen to me again which is why if I ask someone to do something I'll make sure I myself know how to do it.

Which is why I need to learn everything I can about cures for genital herpes so that if I ask someone about it, they can't bluff me. And just in case you're wondering, no, I don't have genital herpes, it's just something that I have to write about (if you know what I mean and if you don't, I simply cannot help you ... LOL)

  3. It's good that you stopped being cocky with your employees and made sure you knew your stuff before asking them to do it.

  4. "There is always something new to learn each day and I make it a point to learn it. " Good for you. A lot of bosses DO NOT take the time to learn anything and expect their employees to handle everything for them! You rock!

  6. Meleah - Yes, I've experienced bosses like that myself and after getting into that embarrassing situation one before, I resolved for it not to happen ever again.
