Where Have All The Good Men Gone?

Looking for staff, especially good ones these days is not easy at all. I thought times were bad and people wouldn't be so picky with looking for a job. I guess I was wrong. We're on the lookout for some staff to help us along with our stockpiling work flow.

We've managed to get two staff already but now we're looking for an office boy to help us with collection of  artworks, CD's and color proofs cos it really is a waste of both my partners and my time just to drive all the way to the heart of the city fighting with traffic to collect a miserable artwork or CD. The nearly one and a half hours spent driving could be used doing much more productive things.

As it is, I'm already way behind in issuing invoices for my clients and I don't want to be doing work and not billing anyone. So yesterday, I interviewed an office boy and to be honest, I did offer him quite a good package along with a best term life insurance package as we don't really skimp on paying people to work for us. If you're hardworking and dedicated, we don't mind paying you a little above the market for that particular position.

So, this guy comes in for the interview. I already had my mind set on hiring the fellow cos I'm pretty desperately in need of help. Halfway through the interview he asks if we do any overtime. So I said, yes, we sometimes do have overtime and that we pay overtime wages. He gave me this funny look like as if having to do overtime was a bad thing.

Good god, you're getting paid for overtime and a good rate at that. It's not like I'm asking you to work late for free. I don't get paid extra for staying back late! Then he asks if he needs to help out with production work and I said, yes, if you're free and we're tied up with work, then of course we would require you to help with production. Once again, he looks at me with disdain and finally says that he will call me back. Yeah, right.

Even if he did call me back, I wouldn't hire him right now. I'm pretty sure he would be a bad investment. No dedication whatsoever. I'm sure he's the kind who only wants to do what his job scope says and nothing more. Not a very good impression at all.

Heck, even I get down and dirty and do more than my job requires of me. I'm in charge of business development while my partner is in charge of finance and admin but both of us don't have any hesitation to do production work, delivery, installations, clean the office and whatnots.

If I was attending an interview, I would want to impress my future boss and show that I'm a go getter. I wouldn't have this negative impression on my face. I've been in this business long enough to read a person and this guy had lazy written all over him in 28 different languages!

Oh well, I suppose the times must be improving cos people can be so fussy with looking for jobs these days. I hope he enjoys his life as an office boy!

  3. Probably he's not that desperate... but as far as I've seen people before, not many want to do what's not in their jobscope.

When I was away on my break, no one helped pick up the slack with my job although it was urgent, and it's not as though they don't know how to do it.

  7. That guy sure sounds highly unmotivated! Good call NOT hiring him! I bet he would have complained all the time about having to work late!

  8. Don't hire people like that!

I've had problem getting my boss' ex driver to even help me send a letter to an office nearby. So calculative doing work! It'll be hard to give and take with people with no motivation and co-operation.

  12. Lina - I have to agree. Some people just won't do anything that is not in their job scope. It's not like as if it will kill them ...
