Though we're both pretty familiar with KL town, we haven't been to Petaling street since they revamped the place. Since we've been practically crawling all the malls for the past few weeks we couldn't think of any new mall to visit and decided why not try China Town.
The more cleaner, modern Petaling Street ...
Well, I must say I miss the old haphazard version of Petaling Street compared to this more ...urrrmmm ... modern version. The old one gave it a more authentic hawker street kinda feel. I used to frequent that place quite a bit in my younger days buying the many imitation ... urmmm, I mean cheaper branded Rolexes, Tag Heuers' and whatnots.
Of course they still do sell all those 'branded' stuff but somehow I missed the old feel of the cramped and stuffy environment it exuded. It made it feel more genuine and in line with the imitation and cheap stuff they sold.
But we did feel like tourists from out of town though. And we also acted the part pretending like it was the first time we were walking through the stalls ... LOL! Well, at least it did give us a feeling like we were on holiday ... hahaha ...
We ended up buying two t-shirts for the boys, a door chime and some fruits, yes, we actually bought fruits in Petaling Street and also had a chicken rice lunch in one of those old pre-war buildings.
Then we took a walk to one of the older shopping malls in KL called Kota Raya and instantly we felt like were in Manila cos the place was practically packed with Filipinos meeting up for their weekly Sunday outings and utilizing the many money transfer facilities on offer in Kota Raya. Like I said, it felt more like we were the foreigners instead of the other way around :D
I haven't been to that part of KL much and that place hasn't really changed much. It has a more 70's or 80's feel with many old buildings still surrounding the place. It used to be my hangout back in the 80's when places like Mid-Valley, Sunway Pyramid, IKEA or One Utama was unheard of. Kota Raya used to be 'the' place to be.
The many existing old shop houses ...
Though it brought back memories of my youth, I don't intend to go there for a very long time. I'll just stick to my favourite two malls at the moment with is Empire Shopping Gallery and Sunway Pyramid!
.
Haven't been visiting Petaling Street or Kotaraya in ages!
ReplyDeleteLook so different now.
This is the place I used to go for my Tag Heuer watches. XD
How come I don't see you in either Empire Gallery or Sunway Pyramid? I'm there usually almost every weekend at Pyramid, shopping and watching movies, as Empire usually becomes our Sunday outing - that Tau Foo Far plus Chinese You Tiao place downstairs or Adidas store where Mel gets a discount of 20% for me to buy some gear.
ReplyDeleteCall la next time, don't be shy shy :-P
So now we know where to stalk you, Nick.. if the need ever arises. Ha! Ha! Ha!
ReplyDeleteWanna stalk Nick, I guess it's easier to just stake him out at the Ayam Penyet place because he always goes there! LOL
ReplyDeleteLOL @ lina. Absolutely agree with you! we just need to go to the ayam penyet shop then ask the staff about nick, i sm sure they will know
ReplyDeleteLina - It is different and I can't say that I really like the change.
ReplyDeleteSo, you also bought those 'cheap branded' Tag Heuer watches from there, huh? LOL!
Gallivanter - I don't see you there either la :D Guess our paths haven't crossed yet. I switch between Empire and Sunway and mostly we go there randomly when we feel like it :D
ReplyDeleteOne place that I must always visit in Empire is the Gelato ice-cream stall ... it's my little sinful vise whenever I'm there la ... LOL!
Maybe we'll bump into each other one of these days :D
Terra - Now I'm going to be walking around these places looking over my shoulders always ... LOL!
ReplyDeleteLina - Aiyaaa, you don't go giving people ideas la ... hahaha!
ReplyDeleteXin - LOL! You just might be right la ...
ReplyDeleteI was actually in Petaling street on Sunday :) didya see me?
ReplyDeletewah spiffy jalan-jalan Petaling Street! Yes, the feeling is not the same. I bought my first 'tag heuer' for rm30 back in the 80s.
